PREFACE

THE sixth issue of the LITERARY YEAR-BOOK will be found, it is hoped, more complete and representative than the volumes which have preceded it in several respects. The chief feature into which variations from the previous plan have been introduced is the Directory of Authors, the compilation of which has involved a great deal of correspondence and much independent labour and research. Within the limits of the book it has not been found practicable to include absolutely exhaustive information, yet it may confidently be affirmed that the YEAR-BOOK in its present form constitutes an advance on what has gone before; and it is possible that further efforts will be made, if encouragement be forthcoming, to improve it. Perhaps a development which will be found generally interesting and valuable is the increase of foreign information. Although a long time must necessarily elapse before a work of this kind takes final shape, the present issue exhibits a reasonable reduction to form of the ideas which may be expected, in time, to bring forth an ideal annual devoted to the interests of literature.

With respect to the compilation of the book, sincere thanks are due, and are hereby expressed, to Mr. Henry Gilbert, who has not only undertaken much of the burdensome work associated with the arrangement of facts, but has also brought to a somewhat tedious task an enthusiasm and a readiness of resource which are beyond all praise.

The separate articles, which are duly initialled as they occur, are the work of Mr. Bernard Cockerell, Mr. Frank Rinder, and others.

Much help has been received from friendly correspondents all over the world. The expression of thanks may be permitted, perhaps, more particularly to the following gentlemen: Mr. F. L. M. Davidson; Messrs. Hachette & Co.; Dr. Taco H. de Beer of Amsterdam; Mr. Edward Cazalet; Messrs. Gay & Bird; Messrs. Sampson Low & Co. ; Don Rodriguez Serra, Publisher, of Madrid; Signore G. Barbera, Publisher, of Florence; The Gyldendalske Boghandel of Copenhagen; Mr. Percy Fitzgerald; Mr. C. Jacobi ; and Mr. Richard Lancefield of the Hamilton Free Library, Ontario. The book deals in the main with the year 1901, but occurrences of importance have been inserted and alterations made, as far as possible, up to the 1st February in the present year.

HERBERT MORRAH.
