OF BUILDING: AN ELEMENTARY TREATISE ON THE PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTION Especially Adapted to the Requirements of Architectural Students. BY E. WYNDHAM TARN, M.A. LOND. ARCHITECT. ILLUSTRATED WITH FORTY-SEVEN WOOD ENGRAVINGS. LONDON: LOCKWOOD AND CO., 7 STATIONERS'-HALL COURT. 1870. 173. e. 28. PREFACE. IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES the Author has endeavoured to introduce the Student of Architecture to a general outline of the scientific subjects connected with his Profession, an acquaintance with which can at present be only obtained by the perusal of a large number of works by various authorities. In compiling this Treatise, the Author has been careful in all cases to consult the writers who stand highest in their respective branches of knowledge; and by avoiding the use of the higher mathematics, as well as those topics which belong more especially to the engineering profession, he has brought the various subjects within the capacity of those whose mathematical attainments do not extend beyond elementry geometry and algebra. 34, MECKLENBURGH SQUARE, LONDON.
