PREFACE. WE again appear before our Readers in the form of a Volume of the good old Friendly style. A happy New Year to our Circle. May our friendship every year become stronger, and our happiness be increased. As the distinguishing feature in our future arrangements, we make an announcement which we know will be received with great pleasure by our Subscribers. Mrs. ELLIS,—the eminent Authoress of “Family Secrets,” “The Women of England,” etc.,-has undertaken to write a New Tale for the FAMILY FRIEND, entitled “THE MOTHER'S MISTAKE.” The Tale will be illustrated in the best style, by ANELAY, and will commence in the First Number of the Third Volume of our New Series (No. 27). This statement, we know, will be hailed with great satisfaction by our rast Family Circle ; and will be instrumental in conveying the FRIEND, with its wholesome moral influences, into thousands of homes where it may not yet have been introduced. It affords us much gratification to state, that the Weekly issue of THE FRIEND has an established success; and this is an assurance that the present arrangements may be safely adhered to. The general direction of the Work continues in the hands of the original Editor, who henceforth assumes the management of the kindred work, THE FAMILY TUTOR, to which many new and attractive features will be added. The mere announcement of Mrs. Ellis's TALE, will be a sufficient proof of our intention to combine in our pages every matter of interest. But in addition to this, many new matters will be introduced; while all the useful and popular ones will be retained and improved. The Work-table Department will continue under the able direction of Mrs. PULLAN; the Chess will still be superintended by HERR HARRWITZ. And, having finished his work of fiction, in the story of ELLEN LYNDHURST, the Editor will find expression in many matters less ostentatious, and probably far more useful. The whole issue of the FRIEND now amounts to Eight Volumes. An excellent set of books for the Family Library—always pleasing, and constantly useful. It is a sort of domestic text-book; assisting wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, and children, in every duty of life. We hope that all who have subscribed to our Work in Numbers, will avail themselves of this stage of our progress, to order the Numbers that may be required to complete their sets, and thus place upon their bookshelves a work of lasting utility. We wish, not merely to be the Friend of to-dày," but for years. ;-to shed our lustre over lives, not merely over a few leisure moments. Neat covers can be had for binding the Volumes'uniformly, an and all the back Nunrberg may be obtained, if applied for immediately:" yadasagot: In the FAMILY Turon, Natural Philosophy, by Dr. Drapier, 'will form the leading subject of the New Volume, To this will be added, papers, upon The First Principles of Chemistry, Diy Professor Silliman ; a System of Elocution, with special reference to Gesture, to the treatment of Stammering, and Defective Articulation, by Andrew Comstock, M.D.; together with a course of Lessons in French, by a Professor of Modern Languages.
