PREFACE. TIME, that never-tiring innovator, like the stream of a mighty river, carries us forward with its irresistible power into the boundless ocean of eternity. A few points or marks are observed, like objects on the shore, to show us how far we have been carried on by the mighty current: these when passed, are passed for ever! May we so number our days as to apply our hearts unto true wisdom. Some stout hearts will brave the voyage without a chart; they find too late their hardihood has ruined them — they fall where none can rescue! These are they who deny their Maker, and set His laws at defiance; their end is perdition. Others there are who have taken a chart, but would not trouble themselves to examine its genuineness—they have a spurious one imposed upon them; for a time they seem to sail securely, but are finally wrecked. These are they who trust to a spurious gospel ; they believe a lie; they obey not the truth, and finally will be condemned. A happy few adopt the chart despised by others, but which proves the only genuine one; they voyage by its directions, and are led safely into the haven of eternal rest. These are they who hear the word of God and keep it.
