"This is the really cheap Encyclopædia, for that only is cheap which is excellent. Now that the country is being deluged with diluted stuff, compounded from Germany and America, what hope is there for the science and literature of England, that publishers dare ever again venture on such another work as this."-ATHENAUM.

"An Australian or New Zealand settler, who left his home with no other accomplishment but that of being able to read, write, and count, might, with such a companion, beguile his long and weary voyage, and become a well-informed man before he reached his destination."

MENTAL DISCIPLINE. Hints on the Cultivation of Intellectual and

Habits. Addressed particularly to Students in Theology and Young Preachers. By Rev. H. F. BURDER, D.D.

"We have scarcely ever taken up a book of a kindred character to this, without being much disappointed, though a multitude have followed in the wake of Locke, Brown, and Stewart. The work before us, however, is an exception, and is really a sterling book. Never have we seen more valuable and instructive matter compressed into a smaller space. To every inquirer after knowledge in its best forms, and for its noblest purposes, Dr. Burder's "Hints" will be most welcome."-WESLEYAN.

ASIATIC SOCIETY. This Number consists exclusively of Fac-similes, and verbal Translations of the remarkable Cuneiform or Arrow-headed Inscriptions, found on a large rock at Behistun, or Bisitun, in Ancient Media, and now deciphered by Major H. C. RAWLINSON, C.B., Political Resident at Baghdad.

These Inscriptions, contemporary with Darius, the son of Hystaspes, record the genealogy and conquests of that monarch; and are in the highest degree important, as corroborating, and further illustrating, the Historical Notices derived to us through the Greek Historians.

There are copious Notes, philological and critical; and part of an Essay on these and other Cuneiform Inscriptions by MAJOR RAWLINSON, which will be com. pleted in the following Number of the Journal now in the press.
