158 BAPTIST HIGHLAND MISSION-ANNIVERSARY MEETINGS. together, for some time, in relation to our tour in the isles. In dismissing the school, he requested the scholars to circulate among the inhabitants (they are but few) an intimation of a sermon. They met at five o'clock. After sermon we returned again to Luing; and though we heard they are not much disposed to turn out to hear, we determined to make a trial. 28th.-This morning consulted respecting the most probable method of being usefully employed on this day, and on the morrow, which was the first day of the week: we thought it advisable, that one of us should preach in Luing, and that the other should sail to another small island, called Seiel, adjacent to the former. The one that remained, preached at a place called Caillepoul, being the most populous, the other in Seiel. At the conclusion, we intimated in both places, that we intended to preach in Seiel on the Lord's day, being the most centrical, and whither they might easily come from Eisdale and Luing. "29th.-The Lord's day; met at twelve o'clock-observed the people crowding from every direction. Each of us preached, according to our accustomed practice, on the Lord's day. The audience was about 300; who listened with much attention. O that they may derive much advantage from the doctrine they heard! In the evening, we crossed to Eisdale, a small but populous island. They turned out well to hear-the number might be about 400. We now left the islands, and, by this description, you will understand, that we visited ten of them. Preaching to the people the doctrine of the cross of Christ; calling their attention to his mission, sufferings, resurrection, and exaltation; exhibiting his work as the ground of a signer's hope, by which complete atonement was made for sin, justice satisfied, the law magnified and made honourable, and an everlasting righteousness brought in, which is unto all, and upon all that believe, without any difference; endeavouring to persuade the people of their need of such a salvation, as was revealed in the gospel; and earnestly entreating them, to be reconciled to God, by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. OBAN. "30th.-Having taken farewell, for the present, of the isles, we directed our course to Oban; about three o'clock arrived there, called on Mr. J. Campbell, an Independent preacher there, who sent a bellman through the village, giving intimation that we were to preach in the evening, precisely at six o'clock, in Mr. Campbell's chapel, newly erected. About 80 attended at the hour specified. We resided with some of our friends all night. ANNIVERARY MEETINGS IN MAY.
