PREFACE.

THE object of this work, which professes to be only suggestive, is, to remove discontent and to create harmony in households, by pointing out, with humility, the precise nature of the services required from each domestic, and the advantages he procures for himself and his employers by fulfilling these services with scrupulous fidelity.

In endeavouring to give the outline of the various duties of the different members of the household, the author may perhaps be opposed in opinion to those who fill similar situations; but his motive has been to show, with the most friendly spirit, the nature of those services, conducing to the pleasure of the host and his guests, and the ready and perfect discharge of the avocations of the servant through his various duties.

The chain of feeling binding men to each other with the happiest results, begins with the warmth of the convivial board, and needs, necessarily, for its constituents, a proper participating by those who are served, and those who administer in the humble capacity of servitors. This truth is felt and silently acknowledged from the palace, and through the
