JUNE.

First Day.

"GOD is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Obedience to the will of God is a work of direct and simple consciousness. It is to be wrought in us by its own self-confirming power,- by doing the will of God, - by recognizing it in all the changes of life, by bowing ourselves down before it under whatever guise it may reveal itself, ―by yielding ourselves in gladness of mind both to do and suffer it.

In thy bosom thou shalt wear
Spells against all earthly care,

Hopes for ever high and bright,
Thoughts as pure as morning light;
Truth that scorns all false pretence,
Conscience void of all offence.

Second Day.

"Lo! I come to do thy will, O Lord."

It must be the settled purpose and intention of your heart to will nothing, design nothing, do nothing, but so far as you have reason to believe that it is the will of God that you should so desire or do. You are therefore to consider yourself as a being that has no other business in this world but to be that which God requires you to be, to have no tempers, no rules of your own, to seek no self-designs or self-ends, but to fill some place and act some part in strict conformity and thankful resignation to the Divine pleasure.

Lord, my times are in thy hand;
All my sanguine hopes have planned
To thy wisdom I resign,

And would make thy purpose mine.

Thou my daily task shalt give,

Day by day to thee I live;

So shall added years fulfil,
Not my own, my Father's will.

Third Bay.

"TAKE, therefore, no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself."

When God bestows any blessing upon you, look only to him in the comfort you receive, and take every day of the manna that he sends you, as the Israelites did, without making yourself unnecessary provision for the morrow.

Day by day the manna fell;
May we learn this lesson well!
Still by constant mercy fed,
Give us, Lord, our daily bread.

Day by day the promise reads,
Daily strength for daily needs,
Cast foreboding cares away,
Take the manna of to-day.

Fourth Bay.

"AND this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God, love his brother also."

The truth is, that one spirit runs through all our affections, as far as they are pure; and love to mankind is the germ and element of love to the Divinity. Whatever is excellent and venerable in human beings is of God, and in attaching ourselves to it we are preparing our hearts for its Author.

Touched by the loadstone of thy love,
Let all our hearts agree;

And ever towards each other move,
And ever move towards thee.

Fifth Bay.

"TEACH me thy way, O Lord! I will walk in thy truth: for great is thy mercy toward me."

Attain a single, simple heart. Never speak to God or man without desiring the end I profess. Let me apply to my most painful, humble duties first and most attentively. Let Let me place duty on the ground of privilege, and consider every opportunity of employing time usefully a favor; in conversation, let me feel that I shall gain more by candor than by victory. He is miserable who makes pleasure his business. God designs us for activity, pur
