"This translation is executed with great spirit and fidelity; and is a proof that the lowland Scottish and English languages were now (in 1513) nearly the same. The several books are introduced with metrical prologues, which are often highly poetical, and show that Douglas's proper walk was original poetry."-Warton. It was begun in 1513 at the request of Henry Earl of St. Clair. The excellent glossary, compiled by the industry of the learned Ruddiman, may, indeed, "serve for a dictionary of the old Scottish language." The life is written by one every way equal to the task.
