Specimens of the Early English Poets, 3 vols. small 8vo. uniform with the above, 18s

1811 1317 FIRST EDITION, small 8vo. calf, neat, by Kalthoeber, 10s 6d 1790 1318 ELLIS'S (Henry) Original Letters, illustrative of English History, including numerous Royal Letters, from autographs in the British Museum, and one or two other collections, with Notes and Illustrations, plates, both series, 7 vols. 8vo. half russia, very neat, 3l 13s 6d (published at 4l 4s in boards) 1825-27

The first of these series of letters contains 411, commencing with one from K. Henry V. (prior to which reign specimens of English correspondence are rare,) and ending with another from the Chevalier St. George to his consort, in 1726. The second series consists of 528, beginning with 14 letters of the reign of Henry IV., relating to Owen Glendower's rebellion, and ending with one of the Patriot Burke's to Mr. Wilmot, in 1795. They are really "most judicious and valuable collections," and may with great justice, as the editor observes in his preface, be termed " Supplements to our Histories."

1319 ELLIS CORRESPONDENCE; Letters written during the years 1686, 1687, and 1688, and addressed to John Ellis, Esq., containing particulars of the Revolution, and Anecdotes illustrative of the History and Manners of those times, edited by the Hon. G. A. Ellis, fine portrait by Meyer, 2 vols. 8vo. boards, 16s (published at 1l 4s) 1829

Mr. Ellis was secretary of the commissioners of K. James II.'s revenues in Ireland. These volumes are rendered particularly interesting, by the notes added by the Hon. Mr. Ellis, independent of the curiosity of the letters themselves.

1320 ELLYS'S (Anthony, Bishop of St. David's) Tracts on the Liberty of Protestants in England, 4to. calf, neat, 10s 6d 1767 "The specific character of Bishop Ellys's work is, that it is a copious defence of moderate Whiggism, joined with a zealous attachment to our ecclesiastical establishment; and that it contains a large fund of historical, constitutional, and legal knowledge."-CHALMERS. 1321 ELSINGE'S (H.) Remonstrance of the State of the Kingdome, small 4to. 28 6d 1641 1322 ELSLEY'S Annotations on the Four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, 3 vols. 8vo. half calf, gilt, very neat, 1l 68 1824 1323 another edition, with Slade on the Epistles, 5 vols. 8vo. calf,

1336

"This is an incomparable edition," says Harwood, "of a work which I shall ever regard as one of the most valuable works of antiquity. No virtuous mind can read these most excellent discourses, without receiving the most exalted pleasure, and the highest moral improvement. This edition of the discourses of Epictetus is perhaps the most perfect that was ever given of a Greek ethical writer.

An imperfect copy is in the British Museum, but Lowndes does not mention the existence of any other set, or a part of a set; and there is no record of any part of the work being in the libraries of collectors.

"The subject of these Essays is sufficient of itself to excite curiosity and attention; but we are happy to add also, that the plan on which they are conducted, and the satisfactory and pleasing manner in which they are generally composed, are well calculated to reward the trouble of perusal. It is obvious that they are the most popular and entertaining of the author's productions; and that they form a very desirable supplement to the periodical works, of which they unfold the history and character."-Monthly Review.

"A diligent perusal of this noble work may animate our nobility and gentry to improve their estates, by the never-failing methods therein recommended. All persons, indeed, who are owners of land, may find infinite delight, as well as profit in this book. To these,' says Evelyn, my earnest advice should be,-that at their first coming to their estates, they would seriously think of the propagation of wood; for I observe there is no part of husbandry which men commonly fail in more, neglect, and have cause to repent of, than that they did not begin planting betimes.' The peaceful lover of the country garden listens gladly to those precepts which taught him how to add another herb to his salad, or to shelter an additional shrub in his conservatory."-British Critic.
