THE QUEEN'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY.

MADAM,

WHILE the nation's general voice hails the happy accession of our present beloved Sovereign to the constitutional throne of a loyal and free people, great and solid is the augmentation of that people's joy, arising from the conviction that, in the person of your Majesty, they once more behold at the head of female society, in this moral and Christian land, a Lady and a Queen, displaying all those virtuous and amiable qualities, all that piety, purity, and charity, which have long been the best boast and the brightest characteristic of British females.

Participating deeply as we do in this universal feeling, it is with honest pride and gratification that we now, with your Royal permission, lay at your Majesty's feet a work in which it has been our endeavour to offer a combined display of national taste and genius, as well in literature as

in art; and of which may we be permitted to say, with allusion to the title adopted for it, that, hoping as we do that it may continue for a series of years to grow in worth and reputation, we build for it, we are convinced, a tower of strength in the REMEMBRANCE that its first appearance was sanctioned by the countenance and protection of QUEEN ADELAIDE.

We have the honour to remain,

With profound respect,

YOUR MAJESTY'S

Most dutiful and devoted servants,

JENNINGS AND CHAPLIN.
