PREFACE.

EAR BOYS AND GIRLS,-At the end of a performance it is the universal

custom to return thanks to those who have favoured us with their attention and support. Our performance- our First Volume-is now in your

hands; and most gratefully do we avail ourselves of this pause in our labours to record the delight we have experienced in being your “Companion." But for your generous encouragement we should never have survived to the proud dimensions of a volume.

The first instalment of this book was sent forth tremblingly; for we feared our ability to sustain agreeably the high and sacred office we had assumed to ourselves as your

Companion” and Instructor. But you were not slow to welcome us, and this welcome inspired us with confidence. You speedily confirmed an ancient faith of ours, that children addressed in the spirit of love and sincerity will not only learn from their teacher, but will reverence him.

While our highest purpose has been the culture of the heart and the development of the affections, mental culture has occupied its due share of these pages. We think, too, we may fairly congratulate ourselves on the great variety of subjects of interest treated of in the volume. The wonders of the Animal Kingdom have been unfolded, and Science made as entertaining as fiction by our Philosophic Mouse. We have here also Tales of interest and moral purpose-Adventures by sea and land—Essays to enrich the understanding and develop the thinking powers—Sketches on the leading points of the History of EnglandBiographies of characters worth emulating—Poetry, that cannot fail to enlarge the heart and exalt the mind-Pastime that, while it entertains, cannot fail to instruct-rich and elaborate Designs in Needlework—and in Sacred History, articles of especial interest on Boys of the Bible. These, and many other features of interest and value, will be found studding our volume.

But the present opportunity should not be passed over without a word as to the future. Much as we have herein done, we feel a vast deal more remains to do. The field of knowledge is illimitable ; therefore it must be our province to make as judicious a selection as may be consistent with the amusement, instruction, and moral progression of our young friends. Without entering into details, we may say that we have many interesting novelties (literary and pictorial) in store for the enrichment of our next volume, which we intend to be far worthier your acceptance than the present one.

Two objects only have we in view,—our success and your improvement. Yes, we have yet another object, and that is, to deserve success.

This, the completion of our First Volume, has been the most delightful episode in our lives; and with all our hearts we dedicate it to the Boys and GIRLS OF ENGLAND.
