Through him we may pour out our sorrows, wants, and desires, as the child flies to his parent for all he needs. God is my Father, I will love him, and will pray with my whole soul to him, in all simplicity of speech and truth. God is my Father; therefore I will depend on his causing all things to work together for good, even when all things shall appear to be against me. Our Father-not mine alone, but Father of all men, nothing can bind me so strongly to my fellow-creatures as this prayer. I pray not for myself alone, but for all others; and the countless children of God on earth pray in like manner for me. As often as I utter these words I pray for the wants of all, and am united in closer bands to all of Christ's family, than by the ties of natural affection. I cannot support, or comfort, all who suffer on earth, but I can do this work of love: I can pray for them, to God their Father,

and mine. My parents gave me not stone when I asked for bread; shall He, whose love to us is declared by himself to surpass the love of the most tender mother, deny me that which is good, when I entreat with heartfelt earnestness? He can help, for He is almighty; He will help, for He is all-merciful; shall I not put my trust in him?

Lord, whose throne is in heaven, whose footstool is the earth, whom all things in heaven and earth praise and adore! eternal majesty, who reigneth over all, my whole heart is filled with a sense of thy honour and great glory; and while, with the ardent love of a child, I draw near to thee as my Father; yet is my soul impressed with deepest humility, and comprehends, in some degree, the immeasurable distance at which I stand; yet does thy condescending self-abasement towards me, as displayed in the gospel of Christ,

bring me nearer to thy presence; and the powers of my Lord receive new vigour, as the quickening beams of the sun give light in life. Eternal, uncreated light, enlighten me! My spirit derived its first breath from thee, and derives all its supplies from thee.

O my Father, that thy name shall be hallowed by me, and all thy rational creatures, is my earnest desire.

Thou knowest, Lord, how dark is our understanding, how far from pure is our heart, how inert our mind, so that of ourselves we can do nothing, can perfect nothing; Jesus Christ has declared, however, that to them that ask, thou wilt give of thy Spirit. I rely on this promise; I obey this command; and now pray for light and strength, to know and do whatever is right; disperse the darkness of my understanding, that I may no longer err

from true wisdom, purify my heart wholly, sanctify my spirit.

In hearing or reading thy word this day, may seed be sown in my heart, and in the heart of all that hear, that shall take deep root, and bring forth fruit. Send true labourers to thy vineyard, and give to thy assembled servants, teachers who shall speak the word with effect, and display its power by their life: and let the hearers be doers also. Let me so hear this day. For through the power of the word, children of God shall be born numerous as the dew-drops of the morning dawn, till every part of the earth shall acknowledge the power, glory, and love of the Father, and praise redeeming mercy, through eternity.

SUBMISSION TO THE WILL OF GOD.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven :"

THE Christian makes the will of God to be the sole rule of his thoughts, desires, and works.

A man of true piety will undertake nothing that is contrary to the will of his Lord; and it will be his first wish, and his earnest desire and endeavour, that his whole life shall be in accordance with God's will. But how can man know what is the will of God? In times of dark ignorance, it was the custom of men to open their Bible, and cast their fate upon the first word their eye chanced to meet. The best way, however, to know what the Lord
