PREFACE

THIS volume was originally intended to be a mere collection of what the Immortals of various ages and countries have said in prose or verse on Immortality and the Future Life, with other utterances, the veriest waifs and strays, some of them, of literature, which whether from their beauty, their spell of consolation, their personal interest, or from some novelty of suggestion, seemed worthy of a place in such a collection. And though the extracts have now been woven into chapters, according to their several subjects, and other matter superadded, yet the book is still an anthology, its sole purpose having been to bind some of these sayings together.
