THIS little work is affectionately dedicated, as a very inadequate, though very sincere, token of gratitude, not only for more than a father's love and tenderness, but for imbuing him from his earliest age with a taste for those pursuits, in which he delights humbly to follow, though he may never hope to emulate the steps of one, who, whether in the pulpit, at the bar, or in the forum, whether in the abstruse walks of science, or in the easier paths of poesy, has won respect and honour, and esteem from his contemporaries, and may aspire to renown from posterity,

In presenting himself, for the first time, in propriâ personâ, as a candidate for the favour of his countrymen, the author of "Oliver Cromwell" takes the liberty, in the first place, to thank them for the kindness with which they received that work, when introduced to their notice under the distinguished sanction of Mr. Horace Smith; and to express a hope that they will not deny to "Marmaduke Wyvil" that meed of encouragement, by which alone he was emboldened again to appear before them.
