The Thesis and the Book

The thesis or dissertation, prepared as part of a program of graduate studies, is only rarely publishable as a book. The differences between the two forms of presentation are described in this volume, and advice is given on how a thesis may be revised for eventual publication.

The authors of the separate chapters are editors, publishers, and scholars: Francess G. Halpenny, Henri Peyre, Robert Plant Armstrong, William W. Savage, Jr, William C. Dowling, and Olive Holmes. Their topic matter ranges from broad questions of purpose and style, to detailed practical suggestions for rewriting. In passing, the existing approach to dissertations in graduate studies is criticized and defended.

The chapters have previously appeared as articles in Scholarly Publishing.. A Journal for Authors and Publishers, and are gathered here in view of the importance of the topic.

The volume will be of value to any graduate student or recent PHD seeking publication, and to faculty members supervising graduate students.
