REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE,

11th May, 1840.

THE General Abstract of the Receipt and Expenditure of the Club for the last year shows at the first view a diminution on both sides of the account of nearly £2000 below that of 1838. This is in great part accounted for by the difference between the 92 new members (including the 40 additional members elected by the Committee) who came into the Club in 1838, and the 24 elected in 1839.

But notwithstanding this reduction in the Receipts of the Club during the last year, it is satisfactory to observe that the sum taken from the Receipts of the present year, 1840, to pay the balance of bills for 1839, is nearly £250 less than on the former occasion.

Ten thousand pounds of the original debt of £16,000 to the Phoenix Fire Office have now been paid off; and the debt of the Club is reduced to the two sums of £6000 and £3000.

The repairs required this year will be of small amount, and will be chiefly confined to cleaning the rooms on the ground-floor of the house.
