RULES AND REGULATIONS.

THE ATHENAEUM is instituted for the association of individuals known for their Scientific or Literary attainments, Artists of eminence in any class of the Fine Arts, and Noblemen and Gentlemen distinguished as liberal Patrons of Science, Literature, or the Arts.

I. The number of ordinary Members is fixed at Twelve Hundred.

Committee.

II. It being essential to the maintenance of the Election by Athenæum, in conformity with the principles upon which it was originally founded, that the annual introduction of a certain number of persons of distinguished eminence in Science, Literature, or the Arts, should be secured, a limited number of persons of such qualifications shall be elected by the Committee. The number so elected shall not exceed Nine in each year. The elections shall take place

during the months of January, February, March, and April. The Committee shall be specially summoned for the purpose, at least one week before the intended Election; no Election shall take place unless Nine at the least of the Committee be actually present, and the whole of those present unanimous in their Election. Not more than one-third of the total number of persons to be thus admitted within the year shall be elected at any one Meeting. The Club intrust this privilege to the Committee, in the entire confidence that they will only elect persons who shall have attained to distinguished eminence in Science, Literature, or the Arts. The Names of Members so elected are to be immediately hung up in the public rooms.

III. Each Candidate for admission must be proposed by one Member, and seconded by another, and the Candidate's names and usual place of residence, his rank (if in the Navy or Army), his profession, occupation, or other description, shall be inserted, at the time of proposition, in the Book of Candidates. The names of the Proposer and Seconder must be in their own hand-writing, that of the Proposer to be annexed at the time of proposal, and the Seconder's a week before the name can be put up for Ballot.

The name of no individual shall be inserted in the Book of Candidates until he shall have attained

the age of eighteen, nor be suspended for Ballot until he shall have attained the age of twenty-one.

The Ballot (when there are vacancies) shall take place between the hours of Nine and Eleven o'clock P.M., on every Monday during the Months of

No Ballot shall be valid unless Twenty Members actually ballot; one black ball in ten shall exclude; and not more than Ten Candidates shall be balloted for on one day.-A List, containing the names, together with those of the Proposer and Seconder, and the other before-mentioned particulars, must be put up in one of the public rooms, at least a week before the day of Ballot, dated and signed by the Secretary, who shall in every case, before any Candidate's name shall be inserted in such List, write to his Proposer or Seconder, requesting to be informed, at least one month before the day of Ballot, whether any alteration may have taken place in the residence, profession, occupation, or other description of the Candidate, since his name was inserted in the Proposing Book, and such Candidate's name shall not be put up for Ballot until these regulations shall have been complied with.

IV. On the admission of each new Member, Notification

the Secretary shall notify the same to him (in duplicate if abroad), and shall furnish him with a

Copy of the Rules: he shall also request him to remit to the Bankers of the Club an order for the amount of his Entrance-Fee and Subscription.

V.-As the payment of these sums will entitle a Member to enjoy every benefit of the Club, so it is to be considered as distinctly implying his acquiescence in the Rules of an Institution to which he thus voluntarily attaches himself, as well as his submission to the restrictions they enjoin, and to the penalties they

enact.

VI. The Entrance-Money on admission shall be of such amount as the Committee may from time to time determine. Any alteration of the Annual Subscription must receive the sanction of a General Meeting. All Subscriptions shall be payable on the 1st of January in each year.

VII.-No Member shall be admitted to ballot for a Candidate, or to vote on any occasion whatever, or to enjoy any of the privileges of the Club, until he shall have paid his Entrance-money and Annual Subscription.

VIII. From and after the 1st day of February in each year, no Member of the Club can be allowed to vote at a Ballot, or to act as Member of the Committee, until he shall have paid his Subscription for the current year.
