IX.-If a new Member shall not pay his EntranceFee and First Year's Subscription-money within three Months from the day of his admission to the Club if he be in the United Kingdom, or within Twelve Months if abroad, the Secretary shall report accordingly to the Committee, who shall cause his name to be erased from the List of Members, unless he can justify the delay to the satisfaction of the Committee.

X. The name of every Member failing to pay his Annual Subscription due on the 1st of January shall be hung up in the public rooms on the 1st of February; notice of which shall be sent to him, or to his Banker or Agent, by the Secretary and if the Subscription be not paid on or before the 31st of March ensuing, the Defaulter shall cease to be a Member of the Club, and his name shall be erased by the Committee from the Books accordingly. Where any Member has not used the Club between the 1st of January and 31st of March, he shall be subject only to removal; but where a Member has so used the Club, he shall be liable to pay the Subscription for the current year.

XI.-Any Member who may be absent from Members England during the whole period within which the becoming Annual Subscription is payable may be considered merary. as a Supernumerary Member, and be exempted from

the Subscription during the continuance of such absence. Upon his communicating in writing to the Secretary his return to England, and upon paying his Subscription for the current Year, he shall be admitted, without Ballot, to all the privileges of the Club, until a vacancy occurs for his readmission to the general List, when he is to be replaced by the Committee. The name of every Member availing himself of the above-mentioned indulgence must be entered in the "Book of Supernumerary Members ;" and if his wish to rejoin the Club be not expressed to the Secretary within three months after his coming to England, he shall no longer be considered a Member thereof. The vacancy of a Member so becoming Supernumerary shall be filled up forthwith.

Eligible XII. The Committee shall have power to elect Ballot. from time to time, without Ballot, any Princes of the

Honorary Members.

Blood Royal, Cabinet Ministers, Bishops, Speaker of the House of Commons, and Judges, to be Members of the Club, over and above the complement of ordinary Members, but subject to the same regulations.

XIII.-Foreign Ambassadors and Ministers Plenipotentiary, Foreign Members of the Royal Society, and such other Foreigners of distinction for Science, Literature, or the Arts (not exceeding ten of the latter at one time), as the Committee may deem it

advisable to name, may be invited to become Honorary Members (without Admission-Fee or Subscription) during their temporary residence in England. No such nomination to take effect, unless Six Members at least of the Committee shall be present and concur therein. No Foreigner permanently resident in England can be admitted under this clause.

Trustees.

XIV. There shall be five Trustees, in whom the Powers of pecuniary concerns of the Club shall be vested, and who shall have the power to adopt such measures, by making insurances, investing money, or otherwise dealing with the income and expenditure, as may appear to them necessary for the interest of the Club at large, whose representatives they shall be in all pecuniary concerns; and the signature of at least one of the Trustees shall be necessary to sanction any payment.

XV.-The Trustees shall be, or shall have been Description at the time of Election, the Presidents of the Royal Society, the Society of Antiquaries, and the Royal Academy, together with two Members of the Club, to be elected by the Committee; and, when not previously elected to the Committee of Management, they are to be considered as additional and permanent Members thereof. If any of the said Presidents shall not be Members of the Athenæum at the time that an official Trusteeship should by the foregoing

law devolve upon such President, the Committee shall have power to elect such President to be a Member of the Club; but if such President should decline being a Trustee or Member of the Club, the Committee shall elect one of the Members of the Club who may be willing to accept the trust. Though Trustees, when once elected, continue to be Trustees as long as they are liable to any legal pecuniary responsibility; and, in the case of the official Trustees, even although they should cease to hold the office in right of which they were elected; yet any Trustee shall be at liberty to resign that office, and shall be discharged from all future pecuniary responsibility as Trustee, from the time he shall signify (in writing) his intention so to resign; and whenever any Trustee, who may have become Trustee by having held one of the Presidencies, shall cease to be a Trustee, the person holding such Presidency for the time being shall be elected into such vacancy, under the foregoing regulations.

XVI.-The general concerns of the Club shall be managed by a Committee consisting of twenty-four Members, exclusive of the Trustees, eight of whom shall be elected annually, at the Annual Meeting; and they are to make such Regulations (consistent with these General Rules) as they shall from time to time think necessary to the well-being of the Club; and their regulations and decisions shall be considered

as binding, unless set aside at a general meeting of the Club, to be assembled as hereinafter directed.

XVII. The Committee shall select, at some Appointment Weekly Meeting previous to the Second Monday in Committee. May, Eight Members of their body, who are to go out, and shall nominate Eight other Members to fill up the vacancies; and the names of those who go out, as well as those who are proposed to supply their places, shall be hung up in one of the public rooms fourteen days before the Annual General Meeting. They shall recommend these to the Annual General Meeting, at which every person present shall be furnished with a printed list of the names proposed, and shall vote by Ballot; but such General Meeting shall have the unrestrained power to elect any Eight Members of the Club at large, to serve on the Committee, that may be eligible. No Member (except the Trustees) can remain upon the Committee more than three successive years, or be eligible to serve again until after the lapse of one year.

XVIII. In the event of any vacancies occurring Vacancies in in the Committee, after the Annual Election on the
