[MAPS AND ILLUSTRATIONS.] LONDON: GILLIG'S UNITED STATES EXCHANGE, 9, STRAND, CHARING CROSS. CHICAGO: RAND, MCNALLY & CO., 148, MONROE STREET. Mar. 29, 1941 LIBRARY By Exchange PREFACE. :0: MANY persons have felt the need of a practical Guide to London-one which shall take them by the hand, as they enter the Metropolis of the World, direct them to a satisfactory abiding place, point out the more common customs of the country, succinctly set forth the most advantageous routes and methods to follow in seeing the various attractions, and impart so much of history and description as shall enable them to comprehend and enjoy what they may see. It is safe to say that no one knows London. I have endeavoured in the following pages to produce within a very small compass a vade mecum that shall enable visitors to see all that is interesting and historic in and round about London, within a few weeks and at a small cost. This end I have succeeded in attaining by arranging in groups and adopting a system by which repetition is avoided. 9, STRAND, CHARING CROSS. August, 1885. CHARLES A. GILLIG. CONTENTS.
