LAIGHT STREET. C. M.*

HASTINGS.

[graphic]

740.

King of Saints.

1. COME, ye that love the Saviour's name,
And joy to make it known!
The Sovereign of your hearts proclaim,
And bow before the throne.

2. Behold your King, your Saviour crowned With glories all divine;

And tell the wondering nations round,
How bright these glories shine.

3. Infinite power and boundless grace
In him unite their rays:
Ye that have e'er beheld his face,
Can ye forbear his praise?

4. When in his earthly courts we view

The glories of our King,

We long to love as angels do,

And wish like them to sing.

5. And shall we long and wish in vain?
Lord, teach our songs to rise:
Thy love can animate the strain,
And bid it reach the skies.

741. The Morning of the Lord's Day. 1. EARLY, my God, without delay, I haste to seek thy face; My thirsty spirit faints away,

Without thy cheering grace. 2. So pilgrims, on the scorching sand, Beneath a burning sky,

Long for a cooling stream at hand;
And they must drink or die.

3. I've seen thy glory and thy power
Through all thy temple shine;
My God, repeat that heavenly hour,
That vision so divine.

4. Not life itself, with all its joys,
Can my best passions move,
Or raise so high my cheerful voice,
As thy forgiving love.

5. Thus, till my last expiring day,
I'll bless my God and King;
Thus will I lift my hands to pray,
And tune my lips to sing.

742. Delight in the Law.

1. Oн how I love thy holy law:
'Tis daily my delight:
And thence my meditations draw
Divine advice by night.

2. My waking eyes prevent the day,
To meditate thy word!

My soul with longing melts away
To hear thy gospel, Lord.

3. How doth thy word my heart engage,
How well employ my tongue!
And in my tiresome pilgrimage,
Yields me a heavenly song.

4. Am I a stranger, or at home,
'Tis my perpetual feast;

Not honey dropping from the comb
So much allures the taste.

5. When nature sinks, and spirits droop, Thy promises of grace

Are pillars to support my hope,
And there I write thy praise.

[graphic]

743.

1. COME, happy souls! approach your God,
With new, melodious songs:
Come, render to almighty grace
The tribute of your tongues.

2. So strange, so boundless was the love,
That pitied dying men,

The Father sent his equal Son
To give them life again.

3. Thy hands, dear Jesus! were not armed With a revenging rod;

No hard commission to perform
The vengeance of a God.

4. But all was mercy, all was mild,

And wrath forsook the throne,
When Christ, on the kind errand, came,
And brought salvation down.

5. Here, sinners! you may heal your wounds,
And wipe your sorrows dry;
Trust in the mighty Saviour's name,
And you shall never die.

6. See, dearest Lord! our willing souls
Accept thine offered grace;
We bless the great Redeemer's love,
And give the Father praise.

744.

1. AWAKE-awake the sacred song To our incarnate Lord!

Dawn of the Sabbath.

1. AGAIN, the Lord of life and light
Awakes the kindling ray,
Dispels the darkness of the night,
And pours increasing day.

2. Oh! what a night was that which wrapt A sinful world in gloom!

Oh! what a sun, which broke this day,
Triumphant from the tomb!

3. This day be grateful homage paid,
And loud hosannas sung;
Let gladness dwell in every heart,
And praise on every tongue.

4. Ten thousand thousand lips shall join
To hail this, welcome morn,
Which scatters blessings from its wings,
To nations yet unborn.

5. If orphans they are left behind,
Thy guardian care we trust:q
That care shall heal our bleeding hearts,
If weeping o'er their dust.

PARTING SOUL. 8s & 7s. Single.*

GERMAN.

1. Part-ing soul! the flood a- waits thee, And the billows round thee roar;

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

747. The Spirit of a dying Christian. 1. PARTING Soul! the flood awaits thee, And the billows round thee roar; Yet, rejoice-the holy city

Stands on yon celestial shore.

2. There are crowns, and thrones of glory, There the living waters glide; There the just, in shining raiment, Standing by Immanuel's side.

3. Linger not the stream is narrow,

Though its cold, dark waters rise; He, who passed the flood before thee,

Guides thy path to yonder skies.

748. The dying Saint comforted. 1. HAPPY soul! thy days are endingAll thy mourning days below: Go, the angel guards attendingTo the sight of Jesus go!

2. Waiting to receive thy spirit,

Lo! the Saviour stands above;
Shows the fullness of his merit-
Reaches out the crown of love.

3. For the joy he sets before thee,
Bear a momentary pain;
Die to live a life of glory;

Suffer-with the Lord to reign:

4. Struggle, through thy latest passion, To thy dear Redeemer's breastTo his uttermost salvation

To his everlasting rest.

749. Weep not for the departed Saint.
1. O, YE mourners! cease to languish
O'er the grave of those ye love!
Pain and death, and night and anguish,
Enter not the world above.

2. While in darkness ye are straying,
Lonely in the deepening shade,
Glory's brighest beams are playing
Round th' immortal spirit's head.

3. O, ye mourners! cease to languish
O'er the grave of those ye love!
Far removed from pain and anguish,
They are chanting hymns of love.
4. Light and peace at once deriving
From the hand of God most high:
In his glorious presence living,
They shall never, never die.

.

Doxology.

PRAISE the Father, earth and heaven,
Praise the Son, the Spirit praise,
Everlasting praise be given,
Glory through eternal days.

[merged small][graphic][subsumed]

All the fee-ble gently lead-ing, While the lambs thy bo-som share.

750.

Christ the Shepherd.

1. SAVIOUR, Who thy flock art feeding With the shepherd's kindest care, All the feeble gently leading,

While the lambs thy bosom share

2. Now, these little ones receiving,

Fold them in thy gracious arm;
There, we know-thy word believing-
Only there, secure from harm.

3. Never, from thy pasture roving,
Let them be the lion's prey;
Let thy tenderness, so loving,
Keep them all life's dangerous way.

4. Then, within thy fold eternal,

Let them find a resting-place;
Feed in pastures ever vernal,
Drink the rivers of thy grace.

1. SPIRIT of power and might, behold A world by sin destroyed:

Creator Spirit, as of old,

Move on the formless void.

2. Give thou the word-that healing sound Shall quell the deadly strife;

And earth again, like Eden crowned,
Produce the tree of life.

3. If sang the morning stars for joy,

When nature rose to view,

What strains shall angel-harps employ, When thou shalt all renew!

4. And if the sons of God rejoice

To hear a Saviour's name,

How will the ransomed raise their voice, To whom that Saviour came!

15. So every kindred, tongue, and tribe,
Assembling round the throne,
Thy new creation shall ascribe
To sovereign love alone.

755. The Joys which are unseen.

1. NOR eye hath seen, nor ear hath heard,
Nor sense nor reason known,
What joys the Father hath prepared
For those who love the Son.

2. But the good Spirit of the Lord
Reveals a heaven to come:
The beams of glory in his word
Allure and guide us home.

3. Pure are the joys above the sky,
And all the region peace;
No wanton lip, nor envious eye,
Can see or taste the bliss.

4. Those holy gates for ever bar
Pollution, sin and shame;
None shall obtain admission there
But followers of the Lamb.

756. Lot of the Righteous and the Wicked

1. THAT man, in life wherever placed,
Has happiness in store,
Who walks not in the wicked's way,
Nor learns their guilty lore.
