Governor of the Wall, and Keeper of the Gates of Manfoul: Yea, there was a Claufe in his Commiffion, that no Thing without him fhould be done in all the Town of Manfoul. So that now, next to Diabolus himself, who but my Lord Will-be-will in all the Town of Mansoul; nor could any thing now be done, but at his Will and Pleasure throughout the Town of Manfoul, Rom. viii. 7. He had also one Mr. Mind for his Clerk, a Man to fpeak on, every Way like his Master : For he and his Lord were in Principle one, and in Practice not far afunder, Eph. ii. 2, 3, 4. And now was Manfoul brought under to Purpose, and made to fulfil the Lufts of the Will, and of the Mind.

Mr. Mind, my
Lord's Clerk.

But it will not out of my Thoughts, what a defperate one this Will-be-will was, when Power was put into his Hand. First, he flatly denied that he owed any Suit or Service to his former Prince, and Liege-Lord. This done, in the next Place he took an Oath, fwore Fidelity to his great Mafter Diabolus, and then being stated and fettled in his Places, Offices, Advancements and Preferments; Oh! you cannot think unless you had seen it, the ftrange Work that this Workman made in the Town of Manfoul.

The Carnal Will oppofeth

Confcience.

Firft, he maligned Mr. Recorder to Death, he would neither endure to fee him, nor hear the Words of his Mouth; he would fhut his Eyes when he faw him, and ftop his Ears when he heard him fpeak. Alfo he could not endure that fo much as a Fragment of the Law of Shaddai fhould be any where feen in the Town. For Example, his Clerk Mr. Mind had fome old rents Neb. ix. 26. and torn Parchments of the Law of good Shaddai in his Houfe, but when Will-be will faw them, he caft them behind his Back. True, Mr. Recorder had fome of the Laws in his Study, but my Lord could by no means come at them: He alfo thought and faid, the Windows of my old Lord-Mayor's Houfe were always Corrupt Wil too light for the Profit of the Town of loves a dark Manfoul. not endure. Now nothing at all pleafed Will-be-will but what pleafed Diabolus his Lord.

-There was none like him to trumpet about the Streets, the brave Nature, the wife Conduct, and great Glory of the King Diabolus: He would range throughout all the Streets of Manfoul, to cry up his illuftriVain Thoughts. ous Lord, and would make himself even as an Abject, among the bafe and Rafcal Crew, to cry up his valiant Prince. And I fay, when, and wherefoever he found thofe Vaffals, he would even make himself as one of them. In all ill Courfes he would act without bidding, and do Mischief without Commandment.

The Lord Will-be-will also had a Deputy under him, and his Name was Mr. Affection; one that was also greatly debauched in his Principles, and answerable thereto in his Life: Rom. i 25. He was only given to the Flesh, and therefore they call him Vile Affection:

A Match betwixt Vile Affections and Car nal-Luft.

Now there was he, and one Carnal-Luft, the Daughter of Mr. Mind (like to like, quoth the Devil to the Collier) that fell in Love and made a Match, and were mar

ried; and as I take it they had several Children, as Impudence, Black-mouth, and Hate-reproof: Thefe three were black Boys; and befides these three they had three Daughters, as Scorn-Truth, Slight-God, and the Name of the youngest was Revenge; thefe were all married in the Town, and alfo begot and yielded many bad Brats, too many to be inferted. But to pafs by this.

When the Giant had thus ingarrifon'd himself in the Town of Manfoul, and had put down and fet up whom he thought good, he betakes himself to Defacing. Now there was in the Market-place of Manfoul, and alfo upon the Gates of the Caitle, an Image of the bleffed King Shaddai; this Image was fo exactly engraven (and it was engraven in Gold) that it did the most refemble Shaddai himself of any Thing that then was extant in the World. This he bafely commanded to be defaced, and it was bafely done by the Hand of Mr. No-truth. Now you

muft know, that as Diabolus had commanded, and that by the Hand of Mr. No-Truth, the Image of Shaddai was defaced; he likewise gave Order that the fame Mr. No Truth fhould fet up in its ftead the horrid and formidable Image of Diabolus, to the great Contempt of the former King, and debafing his Town of Manfoul. Moreover, Diabolus made Havock of all Remains of the Laws and Statutes of Shaddai, that could be found in the Town of Manfoul; to wit, fuch as contain'd either the Doctrines or Morals, with all Civil and Natural Documents.. Alfo relative Severities he fought to extinguish. To be short, there was nothing of the Remains of Good in Manfoul, which he and Will-be-will fought not to deftroy; for their Defign was to turn Manfoul into a Brute, and to make it like to the fenfual Sow, by the Hand of Mr. No-Truth.

When he had deftroyed what Law and good Orders. he could, then further to effect his Defign, namely, to alienate Manfoul from Shaddai her King, he commands, and they fet up his own vain Edicts, Statutes, and Commandments, in all Places of Refort, or Concourse in Manfoxl, John ii. to wit, fuch as gave Liberty to the Lufts of the Flefb, the Lufts of the Eyes, and the Pride of Life, which are not of Shaddai, but of the World. He encouraged, countenanced, and promoted Lafciviouf nefs, and all Ungodlinefs there. Yea, much more did Diabolus to encourage Wickedness in the Town of Manfoul: He promifed them Peace, Content, Joy and Blifs in doing his Commands, and that they thould never be called to an account for their not doing the contrary. And let this ferve to give a Tafte to them that love hear of what is done beyond their Knowledge, afarof in other Countries.

Now Manfoul being wholly at his Beck, and brought wholly to his Bow, nothing was heard or feen therein but that which tended to fet up him.

But now, he having difabled the Lord Mayor and Mr. Recorder from bearing of Office in Manfoul, and

feeing that the Town, before he came to it, was the most ancient of Corporations of the World; and fearing if he did not maintain Greatness, they at any time fhould object that he had done them an Injury: Therefore, I fay (that they might fee that he did not intend to leffen their Grandeur, or to take from them any of their advantageous Things) he did chufe for them a Lord-Mayor, and a Recorder, himfelf: And fuch as contented them to the Heart, and fuch also as pleafed him wondrous well.

The New Lord-Mayor.

The Name of the Mayor that was of Diabolus's making, was the Lord Luftings. A Man that had neither Eyes nor Ears; all that he did, whether as a Man, or an Officer, he did it naturally as doth the Beaft. And that which made him yet the more ignoble, tho' not to Manfoul, yet to them that beheld, and were grieved for its Ruins, was, that he could never favour Good, but Evil.

The new Recorder.

The Recorder was one whofe Name was Forget-good. And a very forry Fellow he was. He could remember nothing but Mifchief, and to do it with Delight. He was naturally prone to do Things that are hurtful; even hurtful to the Town of Manfoul, and to all the Dwellers there. These two therefore, by their Power and Practice, Examples and Smiles upon Evil, did much more Mischief, and fettle the common People in hurtful

dermen.

Befides thefe, Diabolus made feveral He doth make Burgeffes, and Aldermen in Manfoul: Such as out of whom the Town, when it needed, might chufe them Officers, Governors and Magiftrates. And thefe are the Names of the Chief of them. Mr. Incredulity, Mr. Haughty, Mr. Swearing, Mr. Whering, Mr. Hard-heart, Mr. Pitilefs, Mr. Fury, Mr. No-truth, Mr. Stand-to-les, Mr. Falfe Peace, Mr. Drunkenness, Mr. Cheating, Mr. Any

thing; Thirteen in all. Mr. Incredulity is the Eldeft, and Mr. Atheism they Youngeft of the Company.

There was also an Election of Common-Council-men, and others; as Bailiff, Serjeants, Conftables, &c. but all of them like thofe afore-named, being either Fathers, Brothers, Coufins or Nephews to them, whofe Names, for Brevity fake, I omit to mention.

When the Giant had thus far proceeded in his Work, in the next Place he betook him to build fome ftrong Holds in the Town; and he built three that feemed to be impregnable. The firft he called the Hold of Defiance, because it was made to command the whole Town, and to keep it from the Knowledge of its antient King. The fecond he called Midnight Held, because it was built on purpose to keep Manjoul from the true Knowledge of itfelf. The third was called SweelSin-Hold, becaufe by that he fortified Manfoul against all Defires of Good. The First of these Holds food, clofe by Eye-gate, that as much as might be Light might be darkned there. The fecond was built hard by the Old Caftle, to the End that that might be made more blind, (if poffible) And the third stood in the Market-Place.

He that Diabolus made Governor over the first of thefe, was one Spite-God, a moft blafphemous Wretch. He came with the whole Rabble of them that came againft Manfoul at firft, and was himself one of themfelves. He that was made the Governor of MidnightHold was one Love-no-light, he was alfo one of them that came firft against the Town. And he that was made the Governor of the Hold called Sweet-Sin-Hold, was one whofe Name was Love-Flef, he was alfo a very lewd Fellow, but not of that Country from whence the others are bound. This Fellow could find more Sweetness, when he flood fucking of a Luft, than he did in all the Paradife of God.

And now Diabolus thought himself fafe; he had to ken Manfoul; he had ingarrifon'd himself therein; he had put down the old Officers, and had fet up new
