This telling narrative of the stirring events in which the author, as QuartermasterGeneral to Lord Norwich's army, took a prominent part, was written during the long imprisonment which he suffered after the surrender of Colchester. It is the principal contemporary authority for the history of the Siege of Colchester from the Royalist standpoint.

In his early days Gosson wrote tragedies and comedies for the London stage, and is said to have been a player himself; but when his views changed he attacked poets and plays in his well-known" Schoole of Abuse."

This book of the Ground-Platt's, Generall and Particular Prospects of all the Parts of his Majesty's Royal Pallace of Audley End, is most humbly psented & dedicated by his Maiesties most Loyall Subject and Servant Henry Winstanley, Clarke of the Works of the said Pallace, and that of Newmarket." Consisting of three engraved Dedications, to the King, the Earl of Suffolk, and Sir Christopher Wren respectively, and 23 large plates giving different views, plans, and prospects of this grand building, inscribed "H. Winstanley at Littlebury fecit." [1686.] Large oblong folio, brilliant early impressions, old calf, Iol. IOS. One of the rarest works in English Topography, of which but very few copies are known to exist. The present example is quite perfect except for one plate- The Prospect of part of the innermost Court." From the Osterley Park Library at the sale of which it realised £31. At Dr. Mead's Sale a copy produced £50. Winstanley was Clerk of the Works to the King, and builder of the first Eddystone Lighthouse, with which he was swept away by a storm in November, 1703.
