Now when the battle was over, the Prince commanded that yet once more the white flag should be fet upon mount Gracious, in fight of the town of Manfoul; to fhew that yet EMANUEL had grace for the wretched town of Mansoul. (a)

When Diabolus faw the white flag hung out again, and knowing that it was not for him, but Manfoul; he caft in his mind to play another prank, to wit, to fee if EMANUEL would raife his fiege and be gone, upon promise of reformation. So he went down to the gate one evening, a good while after the fun was gone down, and called to fpeak with EMANUEL; who prefently came down to the gate, and Diabolus faith unto him:

Forafmuch as thou makeft it appear by the white flag, that thou art wholly given to peace and quiet; I thought meet to acquaint thee, that we are ready to accept thereof upon terms which thou mayest admit.

I know that thou art given to devotion, and that holiness pleases thee; yea, that thy great end in making a war upon Manfoul, is, that it may be an holy habitation. Well, draw off thy forces from the town, and I will bend Manfoul to thy bow.

Forafmuch as thou makeft it appear by the white flag, that thou art wholly given to peace and quiet; I thought meet to acquaint thee, that we are ready to accept thereof upon terms which thou mayeft admit.

I know that thou art given to devotion, and that holinefs pleases thee; yea, that thy great end in making a war upon Manfoul, is, that it may be an holy habitation. Well, draw off thy forces from the town, and I will bend Manfoul to thy bow.

First, I will lay down all acts of hoftility against thee, and will be willing to become thy deputy; and will, as I have formerly been against thee, now serve thee in the town of Manfoul. (a) And more particularly,

No compofition can be admitted: Jefus has done and will do all for, in, and by, us: to him, therefore, all the glory is due.

Then faid EMANUEL to him, “O full of deceit, how moveable are thy ways! How anfwer to Dioften haft thou changed and re-changed, if fo abolus. be thou mighteft ftill keep poffeffion of my Manfoul! though, as has been plainly declared before, I am the right heir thereof. Often haft thou made thy proposals already, nor is this last a whit better than they, 2 Cor. xi. 14. And failing to deceive when thou thewedft thyself in thy black, thou haft now transformed thyfelf into an angel of light, and wouldft, to deceive, be now as a minifter of righteoufnefs. (a)

Diabolus has no

"But know thou, O Diabolus, that nothing must be regarded that thou canst propound, for nothing is done by thee but to deceive; thou neither haft confcience to God, nor love to the town of Man- confcience to foul; whence then fhould these thy fayings God, nor love arife, but from finful craft and deceit ? He to Manfoul. that can lift and will propound what he pleases, and that therewith he may destroy them that believe him, is to be abandoned, with all that he shall fay. But if righteousness be fuch a beauty-fpot in thine eyes now, how is it that wickedness was so closely stuck to by thee before? But this by the bye.

"Thou talkeft now of a reformation in Mansoul, and that thou thyfelf, if I pleafe, will be at the head of that reformation; all the while knowing, that the greatest proficiency that man can make in the law, and the righteoufnefs thereof, will amount to no more, for the taking away of the curfe from Manfoul, than juft nothing at all; for a law being broken by Manfoul, that had before, upon a fuppofition of the breach thereof, a curfe pronounced against
