ISAIAH.

-ZECHARIAH.

tinually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

12. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

ZECHARIAH.

CHAPTER VII.

8. And the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah, saying,

9. Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10. And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor.

Apocrypha.

II. ESDRAS.

CHAPTER II.

10. Thus saith the Lord unto Esdras, Tell my people that I will give them the kingdom of Jerusalem.

11. Their glory also will I take unto me, and give these the everlasting tabernacles, which I had prepared for them.

16. And those that be dead will I raise up again from their places; and bring them out of the graves.

20. Do right to the widow, judge for the fatherless, give to the poor, defend the orphan, clothe the naked,

21. Heal the broken and the weak, laugh not a lame man to scorn, defend the maimed, and let the blind man come into the sight of my clearness.

22. Keep the old and young within thy walls.

23. Wheresoever thou findest the dead, take them and bury them; and I will give thee the first place in my resurrection.

TOBIT.

CHAPTER I.

16. In the time of Enemessar I gave many alms to my brethren, and gave my bread to the hungry,

17. And my clothes to the naked: and if I saw any of my nation dead, or cast about the walls of Nineve, I buried him.

CHAPTER II.

1. Now when I was come home again, and my wife Anna was restored unto me, with my son Tobias, in the feast of Pentecost, which is the holy feast of the seven weeks, there was a good dinner prepared me, in the which I sat down to eat.

2. And when I saw abundance of meat, I said to my son, Go and bring what poor man soever thou shalt find out of our brethren, who is mindful of the Lord; and lo, I tarry for thee.

CHAPTER IV.

7. Give alms of thy substance; and when thou givest alms, let not thine eye be envious, neither turn thy face from any poor, and the face of God shall not be turned away from thee.

8. If thou hast abundance, give alms accordingly: if thou have but a little, be not afraid to give according to that little: 9. For thou layest up a good treasure for thyself against the day of necessity.

10. Because that alms do deliver from death, and suffereth not to come into darkness.

11. For alms is a good gift unto all that give it in the sight of the Most High.

16. Give of thy bread to the hungry, and of thy garments to them that are naked; and according to thine abundance give alms; and let not thine eye be envious when thou givest alms.

CHAPTER XII.

8. Prayer is good with fasting and alms and righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than much with unrighteous

ness. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold:

9. For alms doth deliver from death, and shall purge away all sin. Those that exercise alms and righteousness shall be filled with life.

CHAPTER XIV.

8. And now, my son,

9. Keep thou the law and the commandments, and shew thyself merciful and just, that it may go well with thee.

10. . Manasses gave alms, and escaped the snares of death which they had set for him.

11. Wherefore, now, my son, consider what alms doeth, and how righteousness doth deliver. When he had said these things, he gave up the ghost in the bed.
