PREFACE.

THESE pages have been compiled from unpublished MSS. accumulated during very many years. As its title indicates, the book, though scarcely suitable for the wholly uneducated, is in no respect beyond the scope of ordinary culture. The author's chief object has been, by brevity, to avoid much addition to the religious literature which already makes large demands on the scanty leisure of busy lives. This end has been attained by elimination of the less matured arguments and conclusions of earlier years, and of many of the steps which have led up to those retained; also of the repetitions and redundancies naturally consequent on the successive consideration of cognate or associated subjects, at different times and often at long intervals.
