DANGERS OF SLOTH AND LUXURY.

THE American beavers are the most sagacious
and industrious of all animals, and erect

the laborious preparations.

The first object is, to form a dam: to do this it is necessary that they should stop the stream, and of course that they should know in which direction it runs. This seems a very wonderful exertion of intellect; for they always do it in the most favourable place for their purpose, and never begin at a wrong part. They drive stakes, five or six feet long, into the ground, in different rows, and interweave them with branches of trees; filling them up with clay, stones, and sand; which they ram so firmly down, that though the dams are frequently a hundred feet long, a man may walk over them with the greatest safety.

Nor was he less celebrated for his prudence and wisdom than his valour; and above all, his temperance and severity of manners were his chief praise. In his early years he never tasted wine; nor would he drink out of a painted cup. He constantly slept in his armour, with his spear in his hand; nor would he use a battle-axe whose handle was inlaid with brass. He did not, however, persevere in this contempt of luxury; nor did he close his days with honour.

The houses which these wise animals build are erected upon piles in the water, thus connected by means of the dam; and are either of a circular or oval shape, with arched tops on the outside resembling a dome, and on the inside having the shape of an oven. These houses are constructed, with the utmost ingenuity, of earth, stones, and sticks, cemented together, and plastered in the inside with surprising neatness. The walls are about two feet thick; and the floors so much higher than the surface of the water, as always to pre-gardens of his palace to be thrown open, (in vent them from being flooded.

TO THE FAIR SEX. The approach of the summer, with its powerful influences on the skin, calls for increased attention on the part of the fair sex in preserving and improving the delicacy and beauty of this important part of the vital economy. The only specific for beautifying and preserving the skin is the celebrated Rowland's Kalydor, so deservedly established in royal and public favour and estima tion. Composed of choice exotics of balsamic nature, utterly free from all mineral admixture, harmless in its nature, and pleasing and delightful in its effects, it tends to neutralize the action of the atmosphere upon the skin, and to promote that healthy action of the microscopic vessels by which its general well-being and the beauty of its appear ance are so essentially promoted. Freckles, spots, pimples, flushes, sallowness, and discoloration fly before its application, and give place to delicate smoothness, and the glow of beauty, and of bloom. Ladies travelling, taking out-door exercise, or bathing in the sea, will feel this delightful application at once to dispel the evils of exposure to the atmosphere, while it will diffuse the grateful feeling arising from the healthful state and elastic action of the skin.

which the most luscions fruits had been untouched, for many revolving autumns,) and suffered to ripen and decay, unobserved and gratified his appetite with the most luxurious desserts.

At length he found it expedient to introduce wine as an agreeable improvement, or a necessary ingredient, to his new way of living; and having once tasted it, he was tempted by little and little to give loose to the excesses of intoxication. His general simplicity of life was changed; he perfumed his apartments, and commanded his helmet to be ornamented with beautiful rows of the teeth of the reindeer. Indolence and effeminacy stole upon him by imperceptible gradations, relaxed the sinews of his resolution, and extinguished his thirst for military glory.

SOME years ago there appeared in BENTLEY'S MAGAZINE a tale, no doubt well remembered by our readers, called "The Handsome Clear-Starcher." What the preparation made use of was, is a mystery; but never was lace or the finest of muslin so beautiful. There was no withstanding beauty so adorned, and the heroine of the tale brought all the sterner sex captive to her feet. This year, 1851, amongst its other wonders, has to boast of the introduction of Colman's Satin-glaze Rice Starch, which may be seen in the Crystal Palace, and which has overcome the difficulty of all other similar preparations, in imparting to the most delicate fabrics a perfect uniformity of clearness, colour and gloss, which even the handsome clear-starcher herself could scarcely

While Hacho was thus immersed in pleasure, the king of Norway invaded his kingdom with a formidable army. Hacho roused himself, and marched forward to meet him. Both armies joined battle in the forest where Hacho had been lost after hunting: and the king of Norway challenged him to single combat, near the very spot where he had tasted the honey. The Lapland chief, languid and long unused to arms, was soon overpowered; and before his insulting adversary struck his head from his body he uttered this exclamation: I fall a sacrifice to sloth and luxury. The honey which I tasted in this forest, and not the hand of the king of Norway, conquers Hacho.—
