when you return again you shall seek him ten times as much. Baruch iv. 28.

For he that hath brought evils upon you, shall bring you everlasting joy again with your salvation. Ver. 29.

In their affliction they will rise early to me: Come, and let us return to the Lord; Osee vi. 1.

For he hath taken us, he will heal us: he will strike, and he will cure us. Ver. 2.

The Lord is good, and giveth strength in the day of trouble and knoweth them that hope in him. Nahum i. 7.

For it is a token of great goodness when sinners are not suffered to go on in their ways for a long time, but are presently punished. 2 Machabees vi. 13.

O Lord, who hast the holy knowledge, thou knowest manifestly that whereas I might be delivered from death, I suffer grievous pains in body: but in soul I am well content to suffer these things because I fear thee. Ver. 30.

ALMSGIVING.

Give alms out of thy substance, and turn not away thy face from any poor person, for so it shall come to pass that the face of the Lord shall not be turned from thee. Tobias iv. 7.

According to thy ability be merciful. Ver. 8.

If thou have much, give abundantly: if thou have little, take care even so to bestow willingly a little. Ver. 9.

If one of thy brethren that dwelleth within the

gates of thy city in the land which the Lord thy God will give thee come to poverty: thou shalt not harden thy heart, nor close thy hand; Deut. xv. 7.

But shalt open it to the poor man: Ver. 8.

Thou shalt give to him: neither shalt thou do any thing craftily in relieving his necessities; that the Lord thy God may bless thee at all times, and in all things to which thou shalt put thy hand. Ver. 10.

There will not be wanting poor in the land of thy habitation therefore I command thee to open thy hand to thy needy and poor brother, that liveth in the land. Ver. 11.

Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: the Lord will deliver him in the. evil day. Ps. xl. 2.

The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies. Ver. 3.

The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness. Ver. 4.

He hath distributed, he hath given to the poor: his justice remaineth for ever and ever: his horn shall be exalted in glory. Ps. cxi. 9.

He that sheweth mercy to the poor, shall be blessed. Prov. xiv. 21.

He that hath mercy on the poor, lendeth to the Lord and he will repay him. Prov. xix. 17.

He that stoppeth his ear against the cry of the poor, shall also cry himself and shall not be heard. Prov. xxi. 13.

He that giveth to the poor, shall not want: he that despiseth his entreaty, shall suffer indigence. Prov. xxviii. 27.

Water quencheth a flaming fire, and alms resisteth sins. Ecc'us iii. 33.

And God provideth for him that sheweth favour: he remembereth him afterwards, and in the time of his fall he shall find a sure stay.

Ver. 34.

Son, defraud not the poor of alms, and turn not away thy eyes from the poor. Ecc'us, iv. 1. Despise not the hungry soul; and provoke not the poor in his want. Ver. 2

Afflict not the heart of the needy, and defer not to give to him that is in distress. Ver. 3.

Reject not the petition of the afflicted and turn not away thy face from the needy. Ver. 4.

Turn not away thy eyes from the poor for fear of anger and leave not to them that ask of thee to curse thee behind thy back. Ver. 5.

For the prayer of him that curseth thee in the bitterness of his soul, shall be heard: for he that made him will hear him. Ver. 6.

Neglect not to pray, and to give alms. Ecc'us. vii. 10. Stretch out thy hand to the poor, that thy expiation and thy blessing may be perfected. Ver. 36.

If thou do good, know to whom thou dost it, and there shall be much thanks for thy good deeds. Ecc'us. xii. 1.

Do good to the just, and thou shalt find great recompense and if not of him, assuredly of the Lord. Ver. 2.

Give to the merciful and uphold not the sinner. Ver. 4.

Do good to thy friend before thou die, and according to thy ability, stretching out thy hand give to the poor. Ecc'us. xiv. 13.

ANGEL GUARDIAN.

The alms of a man is as a signet with him, and shall preserve the grace of a man as the apple of the eye. Ecc'us. xvii. 18.

Shut up alms in the heart of the poor, and it shall obtain help for thee against all evil. Ecc'us. xxix. 15. Better than the shield of the mighty, and better than the spear. Ver. 16.

It shall fight for thee against thy enemy. Ver. 17. Deal thy bread to the hungry, and bring the needy and the harbourless into thy house; and when thou shall see one naked, cover him, and despise not thy own flesh, Isaias lviii. 7.

Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy health shall speedily arise, and thy justice shall go before thy face, and the glory of the Lord shall gather thee up. Ver. 8.

Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to thee, and redeem thou thy sins with alms, and thy iniquities with works of mercy to the poor. Dan. iv. 24.

ANGEL GUARDIAN.

Behold I will send my Angel, who shall go before thee, and keep thee in thy journey, and bring thee into the place that I have prepared. Exodus xxiii. 20.

Take notice of him, and hear his voice, and do not think him one to be contemned: for he will not forgive when thou hast sinned, and my name is in him. Ver. 21.

God be with you in your way, and his angel accompany you. Tobias v. 21.

ANGER AND IMPATIENCE.

He hath given his angels charge over thee: to keep
Ps. xc. 11.

thee in all thy ways.

In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Ver. 12.

The angel of the Lord shall encamp round about them that fear him and shall deliver them. Ps. xxxiii. 8.

My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut up the mouths of the lions, and they have not hurt me. Dan. vi. 22.

I will sing praise to thee in the sight of the angels. Ps. cxxxvii. 2.

ANGER AND IMPATIENCE.

Ps. xxxvi. 8.

Cease from anger, and leave rage. The impatient man shall work folly. Prov. xiv. 17. He that is impatient exalteth his folly. Ver. 29. A spirit that is easily angered, who can bear? Prov. xviii. 14.

He that is impatient, shall suffer damage. Prov. xix. 19.

Hast thou seen a man hasty to speak? folly is. rather to be looked for, than his amendment. Prov. xxix. 20.

A passionate man provoketh quarrels; and he that is easily stirred up to wrath, shall be more prone to sin. Ver. 22.

Be not as a lion in thy house, terrifying them of thy household, and oppressing them that are under thee. Ecc'us. iv. 35.

Remove anger from my heart. Eccles. xi. 10.
