THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF SIN.

THOU art just in all things that have come upon us: because thou hast done truth, but we have done wickedly. 2 Esdras ix. 33.

I have sinned, and indeed I have offended, and I have not received what I have deserved. Job xxxiii. 27. I have done foolishly. 1 Paralip. xxi. 8.

We have sinned with our fathers: we have acted unjustly, we have wrought iniquity. Ps. cv. 6. In thy sight no man living shall be justified. Ps. cxlii. 2.

Who can say my heart is clean, I am pure from sin? Prov. xx. 9.

He that hideth his sins shall not prosper: but he that shall confess, and forsake them, shall obtain mercy. Prov. xxviii. 13.

There is no just man upon earth, that doth good, and sinneth not. Eccles. vii. 21.

We have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers from our youth even to this day. Jer.iii. 25.

I will bear the wrath of the Lord, because I have sinned against him. Micheas vii. 9.

Thou hast executed true judgments in all the things that thou hast brought upon us; Daniel iii. 28.

For we have sinned, and committed iniquity, departing from thee: and we have trespassed in all things; Ver. 29.

And we have not hearkened to thy commandments, nor have we observed nor done as thou hast commanded us, that it might go well with us.

O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our princes, and to our fathers that have sinned; Ver. 8. But to thee, the Lord our God, mercy and forgiveness, for we have departed from thee; Ver. 9.

And we have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his law, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. Ver. 10.

AFFLICTION.

Let thy voice cease from weeping and thine eyes. from tears, for there is a reward for thy work. Jeremias xxxi. 16.

I will chastise thee in judgment, that thou mayest not seem to thyself innocent. Jeremias xxx. 11. Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Ps. xlix. 15.

AFFLICTION.

We deserve to suffer these things, because we have sinned against our brother. Genesis xlii. 21.

It is the Lord: let him do what is good in his sight. 1 Kings iii. 18.

Nothing upon earth is done without a cause, and sorrow doth not spring out of the ground. Job v. 6. Blessed is the man whom God correcteth: refuse not therefore the chastising of the Lord; Ver. 17. For he woundeth, and cureth: he striketh, and his hands shall heal. Ver. 18.

To afflict thee and to prove thee, and that the things that were in thy heart might be made known, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments, or no. Deut. viii. 2.

He hath chastised us for our iniquities: and he will save us for his own mercy. Tobias xiii. 5. Thy discipline hath corrected me unto the end: and thy discipline the same shall teach me. Ps. xvii. 36. Many are the afflictions of the just: them all will the Lord deliver them.

Thou hast corrected man for iniquity. Ps. xxxviii.12. Thou hast humbled us in the place of affliction : and the shadow of death hath covered us. Ps. xliii. 20.

Thou hast made us to be a contradiction to our neighbours and our enemies have scoffed at us. : lxxix. 7.

Thou hast set our iniquities before thy eyes: our life in the light of thy countenance. Ps. lxxxix. 8. I met with trouble and sorrow: and I called upon the name of the Lord. Ps. cxiv. 3, 4.

AFFLICTION.

Going they went and wept, casting their seeds;

But coming they shall come with joyfulness, carrying their sheaves. Ver. 7.

My son, reject not the correction of the Lord: and do not faint when thou art chastised by him; Prov. iii.11. For whom the Lord loveth he chastiseth: and as a father in the son he pleaseth himself. Ver. 12.

O how good and sweet is thy Spirit, O Lord, in all things! Wisdom xii. 1.

And therefore thou chastisest them that err, by little and little: and admonishest them, and speakest to them, concerning the things wherein they offend : that leaving their wickedness, they may believe in thee, O Lord. Ver. 2.

Therefore whereas thou chastisest us, thou scourgest our enemies very many ways, to the end that when we judge we may think on thy goodness: and when we are judged, we may hope for thy mercy. Ver. 22.

God is compassionate and merciful, and will forgive sins in the day of tribulation. Ecc'us. ii. 13.

He that feareth the Lord, will receive his discipline. Ecc'us xxxii. 18.

The mercy of God is beautiful in the time of affliction, as a cloud of rain in the time of drought. Ecc'us. XXXV. 26.

Wo is me for my destruction, my wound is very grievous. But I said: truly this is my own evil, and I will bear it. Jeremias x. 19.

Thou hast chastised me, and I was instructed. Jeremias xxxi. 18.

For as it was your mind to go astray from God; so
