For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. And if to live in the flesh, this is to me the fruit of labour and what I shall choose, I know not.

But I am straitened between two: having a desire to be dissolved, and to be with Christ, being by much the better:

But to remain in the flesh is necessary for you. Phil. i. 20-24.

Forasmuch then as the children were partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself in like manner partook of the same: that, through death, he might destroy him who had the empire of death, that is to say, the devil;

And might deliver them, who, through the fear of death, were all their lifetime subject to slavery. Heb. ii. 14, 15.

There remaineth therefore a rest for the people of God.

For he who is entered into his rest, he also hath rested from his own works, as God from his. Let us hasten, therefore, to enter into that rest. Heb. iv. 9-11.

And I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me: Write Blessed are the dead, who die in the Lord. From henceforth, now, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; for their works follow them. Apoc. xiv. 13.

And he saith to me: Write: Blessed are they who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb: and he saith to me: These words of God are true. Apoc. xix. 9.

HUMILITY.

Let nothing be done through strife, nor by vainglory; but in humility, let each esteem others better than themselves,

Each one not considering the things that are his own, but those that are other men's.

For let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found

as a man.

He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Wherefore God hath exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name. Phil. ii. 3-9. Be humble in the sight of the Lord; and he will exalt you. St. James iv. 10.

In like manner, ye young men, be subject to the ancients. And do ye all insinuate humility one to another; for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

Be you humble, therefore, under the mighty hand of God; that he may exalt you in the time of visitation. 1 St. Peter v. 5, 6.

JESUS OUR SAVIOUR.

Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Heb. i. 8. * Emptied, humbled, made himself as of no account.

God hath given to us eternal life: and this life is in his Son. 1 St. John v. 11.

Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved. Acts iv. 12.

And let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from iniquity. 2 Tim. ii. 19.

This Prince and Saviour, God hath exalted with his right hand, to give penitence to Israel, and remission of sins. Acts v. 31.

To him all the prophets give testimony, that through his name all receive remission of sins who believe in him. Acts x. 43.

Who is over all things, God blessed for ever, Amen. Rom. ix. 5.

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Rom. v.

10.

But now in Christ Jesus, you, who sometimes were afar off, are made near by the blood of Christ. Ephes. ii. 13.

Giving thanks to God the Father, who hath made us worthy to be partakers of the lot of the saints in light:

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his beloved Son:

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins:

Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

For in him were all things created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible; whether thrones, or

dominations, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and in him :

And he is before all; and by him all things consist.

And he is the head of the body, the church; who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; that in all things he may hold the primacy.

Because in him it hath well pleased the Father that all fulness should dwell:

And through him to reconcile all things unto himself, making peace through the blood of his cross, both as to the things that are on earth, and the things that are in heaven. Col. i. 12-20..

A faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation : that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the chief. 1 Tim. i. 15.

For there is one God, and one Mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus :

Who gave himself a redemption for all. 1 Tim. ii. 5, 6.

And being consummated, he became the cause of eternal salvation to all that obey him. Heb. v. 9.

God having spoken on divers occasions, and many ways, in times past, to the fathers by the prophets; last of all,

In these days hath spoken to us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world :

*

Who being the splendour of his glory, and the figure of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, making purgation of sins, sitteth on the right hand of the majesty on high. Heb. i. 1-3.

* That is, the express image, and most perfect resemblance.

JOY IN GOD'S SERVICE.

63

For he that continueth for ever, hath an everlasting priesthood.

Whereby he is able also to save for ever, them that come unto God by himself, always living to make intercession for us. Heb. vii. 24, 25.

If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the just.

And he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but for those of the whole world. 1 St. John ii. 1, 2.

JOY IN GOD'S SERVICE.

Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Acts ii. 28.

Rejoice in the Lord always: again, I say, Rejoice. Phil. iv. 4.

For the rest, brethren, rejoice; be perfect; take exhortation; be of one mind; have peace and the God of peace and of love will be with you. 2 Cor. xiii. 11.

Always rejoice. 1 Thess. v. 16.

Strengthened with all might, according to the power of his glory, in all patience and long suffering with joy. Col. i. 11.

Rejoice, being partakers of the sufferings of Christ; that when his glory shall be revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 1 St. Peter iv. 13.

Whom not having seen you love in whom also now, though you see him not, you believe, and believing shall rejoice with an unspeakable and glorified joy :
