EXHORTATION TO PRIESTS.

29

In chastity, in knowledge, in long suffering, in sweetness, in the Holy Ghost, in charity unfeigned,

In the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armour of justice, on the right hand, and on the left:

Through honour and dishonour, through infamy and good name; as seducers, and yet speaking truth; as unknown, and yet known;

As dying, and behold we live; as chastised, and not killed;

As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as needy, yet enriching many; as having nothing, but possessing all things. 2 Cor. vi. 3-10.

Let no man despise thy youth: but be thou an example to the faithful, in word, in conversation, in charity, in faith, in chastity.

Attend to reading, to exhortation, and to doctrine. Neglect not the grace which is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy with the imposition of the hands of the priesthood.

Meditate on these things: be wholly in these things; that thy proficiency may be manifest to all. Attend to thyself and to doctrine: be earnest in them; for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee. 1 Tim. iv. 12-16.

Keep the good deposited in trust to thee by the Holy Ghost, who dwelleth in us. 2 Tim. i. 14. Labour as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

No man, being a soldier to God, entangleth himself with worldly business; that he may please him to whom he hath engaged himself.

Therefore I suffer all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation, which is in Christ Jesus, with heavenly glory.

EXHORTATION TO PRIESTS.

A faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall live also with him:

If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us.

If we believe not, he continueth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

Of these things put them in mind, testifying before the Lord. Contend not in words: for it is to no profit, but to the subversion of the hearers.

Carefully study to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

But shun profane and vain speeches: for they grow much towards impiety.

Flee thou youthful desires; and follow justice, faith, charity, and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

And avoid foolish and unlearned questions; knowing that they beget strifes.

But the servant of the Lord must not wrangle, but be gentle towards all men, fit to teach, patient,

With modesty admonishing those who resist the truth: if at any time God give them repentance to know the truth,

And they recover themselves from the snares of the devil, by whom they are held captives at his will. 2 Tim. ii. 3, 4, 10—16, 22—26.

I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom;

Preach the word, be instant in season, out of season, reprove, entreat, rebuke with all patience and doc

EXHORTATION TO MEN.

31

Be thou vigilant; labour in all things; do the work of an evangelist; fulfil thy ministry. Be sober. 2 Tim. iv. 1, 2, 5.

In all things show thyself an example of good works in doctrine, in integrity, in gravity,

Sound speech, unblameable, that he, who is on the contrary part, may be afraid, having no evil to say of us.

These things speak and exhort; and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. Titus ii. 7, 8, 15.

It is a faithful saying: and of these things I will have thee to affirm earnestly that they who believe in God may be careful to excel in good works. These things are good and profitable to men. Titus iii. 8.

EXHORTATION TO MEN.

I will, therefore, that men pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger and strife. 1 Tim. ii. 8.

If any men have not care of his own, and especially of those of his house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 1 Tim. v. 8.

And let our men, also, learn to excel in good works for necessary uses: that they be not unfruitful. Titus iii. 14.

That the aged men be sober, chaste, prudent, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

Young men in like manner exhort to be sober. Titus ii. 2, 6.

EXHORTATION TO WOMEN.

EXHORTATION TO WOMEN.

Let women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted to them to speak, but to be subject.

But if they would learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is a shame for a woman to speak in the church. 1 Cor. xiv. 34, 35.

Let the women learn in silence, with all subjection. I permit not a woman to teach, nor to use authority over the man; but to be in silence. 1 Tim. ii. 11, 12. Chaste, not detracting, sober, faithful in all things. 1 Tim. iii. 11.

In like manner women in decent apparel, adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, and not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

But as it becometh women professing piety, with good works. 1 Tim. ii. 9, 10.

Honour widows, who are widows indeed.

But if any widows have children, or grandchildren, let her learn first to govern her own house, and to make a return of duty to her parents for this is acceptable before God.

But she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, let her hope in God, and continue in supplications and prayers night and day.

For she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she is living.

And this give in charge, that they may be blameless. Let a widow be chosen not under threescore years of age who hath been the wife of one husband. * Having a testimony of her good works, if she have

educated children, if she have exercised hospitality, if she have washed the saint's feet, if she have ministered to them that suffer tribulation, if she have diligently followed every good work.

But the young widows shun: for when they have grown wanton in Christ they will marry ;

Having damnation, because they have made void their first faith.*

And withal, being idle, they learn to go about from house to house; not only idle, but tatlers also, and inquisitive, speaking things which they ought not.

I will therefore, that the younger should marry, bear children, be mistresses of families, give no occasion to the adversary to speak evil.

For some are already turned aside after Satan. 1 Tim. v. 3-15.

The aged women, in like manner, in holy attire, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teaching well:

That they may teach the young women prudence, to love their husbands, to love their children,

To be discreet, chaste, sober, having a care of the house, gentle, obedient to their husbands, that the Word of God be not blasphemed. Titus ii. 3—5.

FAITH.

The just man liveth by faith.

Rom. i. 17.

Therefore being justified by faith, let us have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Rom. v. 1.

* Their vow by which they had engaged themselves to Christ.
