That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will repay thee. Ver. 4.

And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, who love to pray standing in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. Ver. 5.

But thou, when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee. Ver. 6.

Behold, I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye, therefore, wise as serpents, and simple as doves. St. Matt. x. 16.

The light of thy body is the eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be lightsome: but if it be evil, the body also will be darksome. St. Luke xi. 34.

He that doeth truth, cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God. St. John iii. 21.

At that time Jesus answered, and said: I give thanks to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. St. Matt.

xi. 25.

SWEARING.

You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform thy oaths to the Lord. St. Matt. v. 33.

But I say to you, not to swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; Ver. 34.

Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king: Ver. 35.

Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. Ver. 36.

But let your speech be, yea, yea, no, no, for whatsoever is more than these, cometh from evil. Ver. 37.

Whosoever sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things that are upon it: St. Matt. xxiii. 20. And whosoever shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth in it. Ver. 21. And he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. Ver. 22.

Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men; but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. St. Matt. xii. 31.

And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come. Ver. 32.

TEMPERANCE.

Take heed to yourselves, lest perhaps your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and the cares of this life; and that day' come upon you suddenly, St. Luke xxi. 34.

For as a snare shall it come upon all that sit upon the face of the whole earth. Ver. 35.

TEMPT NOT GOD.

Why do you tempt me, ye hypocrites? St. Matt.

xxii. 18.

It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. St. Luke iv. 12.

TEMPTATION.

Lead us not into temptation. St. Matt. vi. 13. Now, they (the seed sown) upon the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy: and these have no roots; who believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. St. Luke viii. 13.

And he said to them: Why sleep you ? arise, pray, lest you enter into temptation. St. Luke xxii. 46.

TONGUE.

O generation of vipers, how can you speak good things, whereas you are evil? for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh. St. Matt. xii. 34.

A good man, out of a good treasure, bringeth forth good things and an evil man, out of an evil treasure, bringeth forth evil things. Ver. 35.

For by thy words thou shalt be justified; and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Ver. 37.

He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory. St. John vii. 18.

Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man: St. Matt. xv. 11.

But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart: and those things defile Ver. 18.

Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. St. Luke xii. 7.

Be not solicitous for your

Therefore I life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body more than the raiment?

St. Matt.

Behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns: yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? Ver. 26.

And which of you, by thinking, can add to his stature one cubit? Ver. 27.

And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. Ver. 28.

And yet I say to you, that not even Solomon, in all his glory, was arrayed as one of these. Ver. 29.

Now, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which

to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more you, 0 ye of little faith? Ver. 30.

Be not solicitous, therefore, saying: What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? Ver. 31.

For after all these things do the heathen seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things. Ver. 32.

Seek ye, therefore, first the kingdom of God and his justice; and all these things shall be added unto you. Ver. 33.

Be not, therefore, solicitous for to-morrow: for the morrow will be solicitous for itself.

Sufficient for

And when they shall bring you into the synagogues, and to magistrates, and powers, be not solicitous how or what you shall answer, or what you shall say. St. Luke xii. 11.

For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you ought to say.

St. Luke

God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth. St. John iv. 24.

He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him is true, and there is no injustice in him. St. John vii. 18.
