Bring forth, therefore, fruit worthy of penance; and do not begin to say: We have Abraham for our father. For I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. St. Luke iii. 8.

Wo to thee, Corozain, wo to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the mighty works that have been wrought in you, they would have done penance long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. St. Luke x. 13.

Unless you do penance, you shall all likewise perish. St. Luke xiii. 3.

say to you, there shall be joy in heaven upon one sinner that doth penance, more than upon ninety-nine just, who need not penance. St. Luke xv.

So, I say to you, there shall be joy before the angels of God upon one sinner doing penance. Ver. 10.

I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance. St. Luke v. 32.

PERFECTION.

Be you perfect, as also your heavenly Father is fect.

Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go, sell what thou hast, and give to the poor; and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. St. Matt. xix, 21.

house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, St. Luke xviii. 29.

Who shall not receive much more in this present time, and in the world to come, life everlasting. Ver. 30.

No man putting his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. St. Luke ix. 62.

PERSECUTION.

Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. St. Matt. v. 10.

Blessed are you when men shall revile you, and persecute you; and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake; Ver. 11.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: because your reward is very great in heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets that were before you. Ver. 12.

And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake: but he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved. St. Matt. x. 22.

The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. Ver. 24.

It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household? Ver. 25.

Amen I say to you, there is no man who hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, St. Mark x. 29.

Who shall not receive a hundred times as much now in this time; houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come life everlasting. Ver. 30.

Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. St. Luke vi. 22.

Be glad in that day, and rejoice; for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For according to these things did their fathers to the prophets. Ver. 23.

And you shall be betrayed by your parents and brethren and kinsmen and friends: and some of you they will put to death. St. Luke xxi. 16. And you shall be hated by all men for sake. Ver. 17.

Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep; but the world shall rejoice and you shall be sorrowful; but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. St. John xvi. 20.

PERSEVERANCE.

He that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved. St. Matt. xxiv. 13.

PIETY AND DESIRE OF HOLINESS.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice for they shall be filled. St. Matt. v. 6.

Now on the last great day of the festivity, Jesus stood, and cried out, saying: If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink. St. John vii. 37.

He that shall drink of the him, shall not thirst for ever.

water that I shall give St. John iv. 13.

But the water that I shall give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up unto everlasting life.

Ver. 14.

Jesus answered, and said to her (the Samaritan woman): If thou didst know the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. St. John iv. 10.

POVERTY.

Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. St. Luke vi. 20.

Blessed are ye that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Ver. 21.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. St. Matt. v. 3.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth; where the rust and the moth consume, and where thieves break through, and steal. St. Matt. vi. 19.

But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven; where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal. Ver. 20.

Hallowed be thy name.

St. Matt. vi. 9.

These things Jesus spoke and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said: Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son may glorify thee. St. John xvii. 1.

I have glorified thee upon earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do: Ver. 4.

And now glorify thou me, O Father, with thyself, with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. Ver. 5.

And they were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. St. Luke xxiv. 53.

PRAYER.

Ask, and it shall be given you. St. Luke xi. 9.
Lord, teach us to pray. Ver. 1.

Pray for them that persecute and calumniate you. St. Matt. v. 44.

And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, who love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. St. Matt. vi. 5.

But thou, when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee. Ver. 6.

And when you are praying, speak not much, as the
