Then came to him the disciples of John, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but thy disciples do not fast? St. Matt. ix. 14.

And Jesus said to them: Can the children of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast. Ver. 15.

When you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, sad: for they disfigure their faces, that to men they may appear fasting. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. St. Matt. vi. 16.

But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face; Ver. 17.

That thou appear not fasting to men, but to thy Father, who is in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee. Ver. 18.

FEAR OF GOD.

I will show you whom you shall fear. Fear ye him, who after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell: Yea, I say to you, fear him. St. Luke xii. 5.

His mercy is from generation to generation, to them that fear him. St. Luke i. 50.

FORGIVENESS.

Forgive, and you shall be forgiven. St. Luke vi. 37. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. St. Matt. vi. 12.

For if you forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will also forgive you your offences. Ver. 14. But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your sins. Ver. 15.

And when you shall stand to pray, forgive, if you have aught against any man; that your Father also, who is in heaven, may forgive you your sins. St. Mark xi. 25.

You have heard that it hath been said: Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thy enemy. St. Matt. v. 43.

But I say to you: Love your enemies: do good to them that hate and for them that persecute pray

you: and calumniate you: Ver. 44.

That you may be the children of your Father, who is in heaven who maketh his sun to rise upon the good and the bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust. Ver. 45.

Then Peter came unto him, and said: Lord, how often shall my brother offend against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? St. Matt. xviii. 21.

Jesus said to him: I say not to thee, till seven times; but till seventy times seven. Ver. 22.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened to a king, who would take an account of his servants. Ver. 23.

And when he had begun to take the account, one was brought to him, that owed him ten thousand talents. Ver. 24.

And as he had not wherewith to pay it, his lord commanded that he should be sold, and his wife and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. Ver. 25.

But that servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Ver. 26.

And the lord of that servant, being moved with. compassion, let him go, and forgave him the debt. Ver. 27.

But when that servant was gone out, he found one of his fellow-servants that owed him a hundred pence, and laying hold of him, he throttled him, saying: Pay what thou owest. Ver. 28.

And his fellow-servant, falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Ver. 29.

And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. Ver. 30.

Now his fellow-servants seeing what was done, were very much grieved: and they came, and told their lord all that was done. Ver. 31.

Then his lord called him, and said to him: Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all the debt, because thou besoughtest me. Ver. 32.

Shouldest not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow-servant, even as I had compassion on thee? Ver. 33.

And his lord being angry, delivered him to the torturers, until he should pay all the debt. Ver. 34.

So also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts. Ver. 35.

FRATERNAL REPROOF.

Why seest thou a mote in thy brother's eye, and seest not a beam in thy own eye? St. Matt. vii. 3.

Or how sayest thou to thy brother: Let me cast the mote out of thy eye; and behold a beam is in thy own eye? Ver. 4.

Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thy own eye, and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Ver. 5.

But if thy brother shall offend thee, go, and reprove him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother. St. Matt. xviii. 15.

But if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand. Ver. 16.

And if he will not hear them, tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and the publican. Ver. 17.

Take heed to yourselves. If thy brother sin against thee, reprove him: and if he do penance, forgive him. St. Luke xvii. 3.

GOD'S LOVE AND PROVIDENCE.

The very hairs of your head are all numbered. St. Matt. x. 30.

I will arise, and will go to my father, and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee: St. Luke xv. 18.

I am not now worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. Ver. 19.

And, rising up, he went to his father. And when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and running to him, fell his neck, and kissed him. Ver. 20.

God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting. St. John iii. 16.

For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him. Ver. 17.

Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father; having loved his own, who were in the world, he loved them unto the end. St. John xiii. 1.

GOOD EXAMPLE.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. St. Matt. v. 16.

I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also. St. John xiii. 15.

Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven; where neither the rust nor the moth doth consume,
