Praise him, for he rose again,

Now our faith is not in vain ;
Died but once, and dies no more,
Lives to reign for evermore.

Teach us, oh ye sons of light,
Ever holy, ever bright,

Ye who joined the ransom'd throng,

[blocks in formation]

We praise thee, O God, we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. We will sing praises unto thee as long as we live; we will sing praise unto our God while we have any being; with them that stand around thy throne and magnify thy great name we join our voices, to adore and praise thee, our God, our Father, and our Friend. Thy goodness and mercy have followed us another day, and again to-night we are the living in health, and in peace, and in comfort, to give thanks unto thee, O Lord, our God.

ever.

Family response.

For thy mercy endureth for

We have, O Lord our God, gone forth to our labour and to our work, at which we would not repine, but would bless thee for its discipline; we

have been sustained by thee amidst it all; every needful want has been supplied; thou who feedest the fowls of the air hast been mindful of us; the outgoings of this evening rejoice, and we bend again at the mercy-seat to make mention of the loving kindness of the Lord our God.

Family response. For thy mercy endureth from generation to generation.

How grateful to us, O Lord, is this time of calm and quiet retirement from the duties of the day; how thankful would we be to thee that we may thus come unto thee and seek thy forgiveness from all the sins and follies that have marked another day; unto thee we come because thou art a God pardoning transgression and sin; because thou art faithful and willing to forgive us, and because the blood of Christ cleanseth from all sin, we do not tremble in thy presence, but claim as children the promised blessing of our Father, our peace with thee through Christ our Lord.

Family response. Hearken unto the voice of our cry, our King and our God, for unto thee do we pray.

We are thankful, O God, that we have been kept this day from outward transgression; but who can understand his errors ? cleanse thou us from secret faults. If we have forborne to show kindness to-day where we might and ought to have done so; if we have turned away from the wants of others who may have needed our help; if we have spoken angry words

without cause, or provoked strife by our imprudence; if we have spoken evil of our neighbour or been harsh in our judgments on others; if we have failed to encourage any who were trying to do well and have thus been stumbling blocks to them; or if in any way we have omitted to do right, or unintentionally done wrong, we beseech thee to forgive us, for Christ's sake.

Family response. O Lord, have mercy upon us, and grant us thy salvation.

And now, O Father, keep us! let the eyes which never slumber be on us, and the arms which are never weary be around us; let not the cares of the day interfere with the repose we need and seek; may our sleep be calm and undisturbed; may our dreams be fresh and pure; and when we awake may we be still with thee. We ask these blessings for all we love as well as for ourselves, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Family response. Unto whom, with thyself, and Holy Spirit, we ascribe all honour and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

For Friday Morning.

SCRIPTURE.

God created man in his image.

By one man sin entered the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. For all have sinned, and come short of

the glory of God.

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

He that believeth on him shall not be condemned, but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

For every one that doeth evil, hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us.

Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit.

Verily, I say unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of God.

Say unto them, as I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turu ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel!

I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God, over a sinner that repenteth.

I will arise, and go to my father, and say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

HYMN.

O timely happy, timely wise,
Hearts that with rising morn arise!
Eyes that the beam celestial view
Which evermore makes all things new.

New every morning is the love

Our wakening and uprising prove;

Through sleep and darkness safely brought,
Restored to life, to power, and thought.

New mercies each returning day,
Hover around us while we pray;

New perils past, new sins forgiven,

New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.
