back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me; then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

[blocks in formation]

The bright and starry flowers,
Refreshed by dewy showers,
Sweet fragrance yield.
God of the waking day,

Be with us on our way;
Our strength, our shield!

Lord! if our hearts are bright,
In pleasure's sunny light,

Oh then sustain !

To thee, if cares arise,

And dim these sunbright skies,

We turn again!

If, on affection's wing,

Our yearning thoughts will spring
Towards mem'ry's land;

Then Saviour wipe the tears,

That cling round those sweet years,
With thine own hand!

In sorrow's darkling storm
Oh! let us see thy form,
On the rough wave.

Father, through each short hour,
With thine own succouring power,
Uphold and save!

Family response. For thy mercy endureth from generation to generation.

Another day reminds us of new duties to be done, new difficulties to be encountered, new victories over

self to be acquired, and new attainments to be made in the Christian life. But how shall we do this without thee, our rock, our strength, our shelter, and our God. Unto whom can we come but unto thee, and whither shall we look but to thee; behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress, so do our eyes wait upon thee, O Lord our God, until thou have mercy upon us.

Family response. Have mercy upon us,

have mercy upon us.

Strengthless without thee, we shall be able to do all things if thou art with us. duty be postponed if it is in the power of our hand to do it. Let no pleasure be indulged in if it be inconsistent with thy will. Let no word be spoken wilfully that may give pain to others. Let us not in word or deed grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom the disciples of Christ are sealed to the day of redemption. Help us to try and do good to all, especially to those most nearly related to us. And in all things let integrity and uprightness preserve us.

Family response. And do good, O Lord, to them that be good, and to them that be upright in heart.

Remember with us our kindred and friends; they and we stand alike in need of pardon, and that pardon we ask for them and for us, through the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ: through whom may they

and we taste thy favour, and walk in the light of thy countenance all the days of our life, which thou givest us to live upon the earth.

Family response. We beseech thee to hear us, O Lord.

We thank thee that though we are sinful and weak, we have power to think good thoughts and to do many good deeds, unto which thou dost every day call us in thy gospel; may we therefore strive to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, because thou dost work in us to will and to do of thy good pleasure: so shall we live in thy fear, and dying, shall be enabled to cast ourselves upon thy mercy, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Family response. Unto whom, with the Father, and the Holy Ghost, the God whom we worship, be glory for ever. Amen.

For Wednesday Evening.

SCRIPTURE.

Now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away, behold all things are become

new.

There is no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit; for they that are of the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh, but they that are after the spirit, the things of the spirit.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. For the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die, but if, through the spirit, ye mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

And the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Love not the world neither the things that are in the world; if any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, the pride of life, is not of the Father,—but is of the world.

HYMN.

My years are numbered by my God,

How

many, or how few;

And every danger of my road

Passes beneath his view.
