May we this day have grace to keep our hearts with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life; may we strive to be courteous and gentle in our words; forbearing and kind in our temper; longsuffering and patient with those who may grieve us, even as thou, O Father, art with us every day, so that when the quiet night shall come, we may be able to look back upon a well-ordered and a well-spent day.

Family response. And this we beg, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

We commend to thy care all our beloved relations and friends; we especially beseech thee to watch over the young and the feeble, and all our absent loved ones, whom in thy mercy we hope to meet again; may all whom we love, be among the disciples of Jesus Christ, and finally be recognised as such in the world of rest, and purity, and peace, beyond the grave.

Family response. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to have mercy upon us and hear us.

Accept this our morning sacrifice of prayer and of thanksgiving, O Father of our mercies, and the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have access, with one spirit, into thy presence, and in whose name alone we present this family worship, beseeching thee to hear us in heaven thy dwelling place, and when thou hearest to answer and forgive.

Family response. The Lord bless us, and keep us; the Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us; the Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace. Amen.

For Cuesday Evening.

SCRIPTURE.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Whosoever will, let him take of the water of life

freely.

All that the Father hath given me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

I will be merciful to their unrighteousness; and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

HYMN.

My Saviour, shall the night's repose

Succeed the weary day,

Without a song to cheer its close,

And chase its cares away ?

Too many a thought its joy and woe
Have torn from thee and heaven;
One evening hour to thee I owe,
One hour to thee be given.

Thus be each dark, polluting stain,
Forgiven, yet abhorred;

Each fleeting hope and thrilling pain

Lost in thy presence, Lord!

Then, round my bed, with guardian wing,

Enfold and shelter me;

And may I wake thy love to sing,

Or die thy love to see.

PRAYER.

How kind and gracious are thy words, O Lord, to them that trust in thee. We know that thou art mindful of us, because thou hast been our shepherd, and as we look back on this and the other days of our lives, we cheerfully acknowledge that we have not wanted any good thing; and thus, impressed with a sense of thy goodness, we bend before thee, to worship and to bless thy holy name.

ever.

Family response.

For thy mercy endureth for

We remember him, who, though he was rich, yet for our sakes became poor, and who lived a life or unbroken obedience to thy will, who went about doing good, and finally, according to the Scriptures, died

upon the cross to reconcile us unto thee, and to bring us back into thy family from which we had wandered, and to restore to us the blessings we had forfeited through our sin; and as we remember him we place ourselves beneath his cross, empty, guilty, and weak, trusting to thy love for Christ's sake to receive us and bless us with the pardon of all our iniquities and the acceptance of this day's endeavour to fill up our station in life with Christian propriety.

Family response. O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world, we beseech thee to hear us.

Every day we beseech thee, O God, to send forth thy Holy Spirit into our hearts to convince us of sin and of righteousness, and of judgment; to make our consciences quick to discover, and tender to feel the approaches of sin; that we may believe in Jesus Christ, and that he may become our wisdom, and our righteousness; and that being found in him we may be able to look forward to the judgment with the Christian hope that there we shall meet with no condemnation.

Family response. O Lord, have mercy upon us, and grant us thy salvation.

Through the silent shadows of the night, be our keeper and our friend. There is no night with thee. Thou never slumberest nor sleepest. Let not devouring flames nor the hands of wicked men disturb our needed repose. Let not the anxious cares connected with the day invade the hours of darkness. May the sick and the afflicted specially experience thy tenderness and care.

As one whom his mother comforteth do thou comfort all them that mourn: and do for us and for them, not according to our weak petitions, but according to thy abundant mercy, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Family response. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

For Wednesday Morning.

SCRIPTURE.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth forth knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple: the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea than fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honey-comb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned, and in keeping of them, there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep
