PRAYER.

Once more, O heavenly Father, do we as a family bend before thy mercy seat. Thou hast invited us to come at all times with freedom of speech, and in the name of Jesus Christ, thy well beloved son, to ask thee for those "things which are requisite and necessary as well for the body as the soul."

Family response. Turn not thy mercy from us, we beseech thee, O Lord.

The blessings we sought at thy hand this morning thou hast granted; our health has been continued; our daily wants have been supplied: neither disease nor death has invaded our family circle; we have, we hope, been kept from evil and unkind thoughts towards each other and while all thy works praise thee, we desire to bless thee, and again to devote ourselves to thy service.

Family response. O let thy mercy lighten upon us, for our trust is in thee.

And now, O God, the night is come like to the day, we would take shelter beneath the wing of thy kind fatherhood; the night is thine, and thine eyes never slumber nor sleep; we bless thee for its kind release from the toil of the day, and in the confidence of thy care we lie down to rest, beseeching thee to be our keeper until another morning shall bid us enter upon the duties of life.

Family response. Behold he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

Forgive us, we beseech thee, all the sins we have committed against thee this day; we hope thou hast kept us from outward transgression, and that our hands are washed in innocency; but who can understand his errors; thy pure eyes may have seen much evil in us, where we have detected none; and because there is no man that liveth and sinneth not, we again humbly beseech thee, for Christ's sake, to receive us graciously into thy everlasting favour.

Family response. And cleanse thou us from secret faults, for thy mercy's sake, in Jesus Christ.

We commend to thy tender care all that we know and love; especially those whom we desire, in the unuttered affection of our hearts, to remember before thee; we beseech thee to watch by the sick and the afflicted; to comfort all those whose eyes are held waking, through any cause whatsoever; and grant, O most merciful God, that we may arise in the morning prepared cheerfully to do thy will; and all this we beg for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son, our Saviour.

Family response. And now to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, be honour and glory, dominion and power, for ever and ever. Amen.

For Tuesday Morning.

SCRIPTURE.

Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who covereth thyself with light as with a garment who stretcheth out the heavens like a curtain: who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters

who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. Thou makest darkness, and it is night; wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening. O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy riches. The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever; the Lord shall rejoice in his works. He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth; he toucheth the hills, and they smoke. I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord. Let the sinners be consumed

out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the Lord, O my soul. Praise ye the Lord.

HYMN.

O Lord, not these bright heavens alone
Can cheer our pilgrim way;

We ask our sunshine from thy throne,
Thy smile, to make our day.

Oh let thine angel guards around
Our paths of life prepare,

That we may find them holy ground,
With thy kind presence there.

Then, though the desert land we tread,
The land where terrors meet,
Thy banner shall be o'er our head,
Thy light before our feet.

In rudest wilds shall dwell thy power,
Where'er thy pilgrims be,
And love forget each weary hour
When duty toils for thee.

PRAYER.

O Lord our God, how great is thy goodness which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee, and put their trust in thee! According to the multitude of thy mercies dost thou have compassion on us, from day to

day, and show us how good it is to trust in the Lord

and wait patiently for him.

Family response.

O Lord, our Lord, how excellent

is thy name in all the earth.

The heavens declare thy glory, O God, and the firmament sheweth forth thy handy work; day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth forth knowledge; we rejoice to awake in the strength thou hast given us while we slept, and while we look around on all the works of thy hands with wonder and with praise, we look up to thee again to guard us through another day, to help us amidst its difficulties, and to enable us to show a meek and docile spirit, should we at any time be tempted to forget thy word, or to disobey thy will.

Family response.

Lord.

We beseech thee to hear us, O

Give us this day our daily bread, and contentedness therewith; if thou dost call us forth to labour from the morning to the evening, whether with our hands or our heads, may we not look upon any thing we have to do as task work; but may we accept each duty and each trial as coming from thee, our Father in heaven, and thus, through the help of thy Holy Spirit, may our chequered career yield the rich fruits of a holy life to thy praise and glory.

Family response. And unto thee will we give thanks continually, for thou art our help and our shield.
