he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

HYMN.

Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run:
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part;
Who, all night long, unwearied sing
High praise to the Eternal King.

All praise to thee who safe hast kept,
And hast refreshed me while I slept.

Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake!

Direct, control, suggest, this day,

All I design, or do, or say;

That all my powers, with all their might,

In thy sole glory may unite.

Praise God; from whom all blessings flow:
Praise him, all creatures here below:
Praise him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

B 2

PRAYER.

O God our heavenly Father, the Creator of all worlds and the Redeemer of ours, thy tender mercies are over all thy works; in thee all creatures live and move and have their being, and by the word of thy power all things are upheld and continue to show forth thy glory.

ever.

Family response. For thy mercy endureth for

We awake, sustained by thee, to behold the pleasant light of another day; we have laid down and slept in peace, and thou hast watched over us during these most unguarded hours; refreshed and strengthened by thy care, we would again come before thee and devote the lives thou hast preserved unto thy service, for thou hast made us, and thine we are.

ever.

Family response.

For thy mercy endureth for

We begin another day and week of active life with powers of body and of mind continued to us by thy merciful care; O help us by thy good Spirit to remember that they are thy gift to us; may we use them diligently and conscientiously; that life may be ours, because we are thine, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Family response. We beseech thee to hear us,

O Lord.

Let us not forget the lessons taught us by thy

truth on the past day, amidst the cares and duties of our outward life; but may we be enabled, through thy gracious help, to set thee before us all the day long; that no temptation may surprise us into sin, and that in all things we may show ourselves the disciples of Jesus Christ.

Family response.

For whose sake, we beseech

thee to hear us, O Lord.

Give us this day our daily bread; if we have to labour for it, give us strength and willingness to toil as in thy name; and if we are exempt from this, through thy kind providence, may we not only be thankful to God, but may some of our leisure be occupied in works of Christian love.

Family response. For even Christ left us an example that we should follow in his steps.

If this day we have to bear any cross; if our tempers are tried, or our inclinations crossed; if disappointment or trial, in any shape, overtake us; leave us not to ourselves we beseech thee, for without thee we can do nothing; succour us in the hour of need, and help us amidst our own weakness to show forth thy strength, O Lord our God.

Family response. And to thy name will we give

thanks for ever.

And now once more do we beseech thee to forgive us all our sins, for they are very many; we remember them with sorrow, and would be very humble in thy sight, O our Father; and again we bless thee, that if

we confess our sins, thou art faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin.

Family response. And now may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all for everAmen.

more.

For Monday Evening.

SCRIPTURE.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so; but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Stand in awe, and sin not. Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.

There be many that say, who will show us any good. Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart; more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep; for thou Lord only makest me dwell in safety.

HYMN.

Sun of my soul! thou Saviour dear!
It is not night, if thou be near;
O may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide thee from thy servant's eyes.
When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My weary eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.
Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without thee I dare not die.

Watch by the sick; enrich the poor
With blessings from thy endless store
Be every mourner's sleep to night
Like infant slumbers, pure and light.

;

Come near and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take;
Till in the ocean of thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

KEBLE.
