REV. W. G. BARRETT,
ROYSTON : T. PICKERING.
May I ask my reader's attention to a few brief words before he pronounces judgment on this small volume, committed to the sea of public opinion“ in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling.”
I am well aware that this little manual, having for its aim an improved family worship, is an innovation upon our old established customs, and may be thought at variance with our distinctive and cherished convictions ; feeling therefore, that this little book, because it is an innovation, may be summarily dismissed with hasty pre-judgment, I solicit a moment's attention to this preface.
During twenty years' experience in the Christian ministry, at home and abroad, there has been no part of my religious duties performed with less satisfaction to myself, and I have always feared with less profit to others, than the morning and evening exercise of family worship. During the same time I have had frequent opportunities of witnessing what I have deemed the prominent mistakes in the same service as conducted in other families.
