28. For the kingdom is the Lord's, and he is the governor among the nations.

PSALM XXIII.

This Pfalm was probably written during the exile and wanderings of David; he expreffes his fatisfaction in the protection and providence of God, and his firm bope of restoration.

1. THE Lord is my fhepherd, therefore I fhall lack nothing.

2. He will feed me in green pastures, and lead me forth befide quiet waters.

3. He will bring me back, and guide me in the paths of righteousness, for his name's fake.

4. Yea, though I ftray into the valley of the hadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou wilt

be with me, thy ftaff and thy crook, they will com

fort me.

5. Thou wilt prepare a table for me, in the prefence of mine enemies; thou wilt anoint my head with oil, and my cup fhall run over.

This Pfalm was probably compofed on bringing off the Ark to Mount Zion, after the defeat of the Jebusites.

I. THE earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof; the compafs of the world, and they that dwell therein.

2. For he has founded it upon the feas, and eftablished it upon the floods.

3. Who fhall afcend into the hill of the Lord, and who fhall ftand in his holy place?

4. He that hath clean hands and a pure heart, who hath not lift up his foul unto vanity, nor fworn with deceit.

5. He fhall receive bleffing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his falvation.

6. This is the generation of them that feek, that feek thy face, O thou God of Jacob.

7. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory fhall come in.

8. Who is the King of Glory? the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

PSALM XXV.

This Pfalm appears to have been written when David, befides the hatred of his enemies, was tormented with the confcience of his juvenile fins. Venema is of opinion, that it was written particularly at that crifis, when David, informed by Jonathan of his father's determined purpose to put him to death, was let down

through a window by his wife Michal, and fo with difficulty efcaped, 1 Sam. xix.

1. UNTO thee, O Lord, do I lift up my foul; 0 my God in thee do I trust, let me not be ashamed, neither let mine enemies triumph over me.

2. O let none that hope in thee be ashamed; let them be afhamed, who deal treacherously without cause.

3. Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.

4. Lead me in the truth, and teach me; for thou art the God of falvation, and in thee hath been my hope all the day.

5. Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies, and thy loving kindness, for they have been ever of old.
