THE NEW CENTURY FIFTH READER REVISED SELECTED FROM THE WORLD'S STANDARD LITERATURE CHICAGO, NEW YORK, LONDON TARTAND JO LEGE LIBRARY GIFT OF GINN & CO. DEC 11 1930 Copyright, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 THE PREFACE. This book is expected to be read by boys and girls in the seventh and eighth grades. In point of difficulty it follows naturally the Fourth Reader in this series, leading the pupil into a new and somewhat more difficult field of literature. Many of the selections are longer than those usually found in school readers, and will attract and hold the interest by their dramatic and narrative qualities. The work of a number of contemporary authors has been drawn upon in the hope of imparting to the volume more of the spirit of the times in which we live. An acquaintance with literature is a good thing, but a love for it is better. The purpose of this book is to lead boys and girls to read more, to go from the selection given to the complete story or volume. To assist in this the sources are indicated both in the table of contents and at the head of the selections. The selections from Hawthorne, Parton, Whittier, Burroughs, Emerson, Holmes, Lowell, Charles Egbert Craddock, and Lucy Larcom are used by permission of, and special arrangement with, Houghton, Mifflin & Co., publishers of the works of the authors named. For the use of the other valuable copyrighted matter, thanks are extended to The American Publishing Company, The Bowen-Merrill Company, J. B. Lippincott Company, A. C. McClurg & Co., Small, Maynard & Co., Armand Hawkins, and Miss Anna Gordon. The publishers are also under obligations to Chauncey M. Depew and Henry Watterson for permission to use selections from their works. |
