THE revolving year again demands from us our cuftomary, but hearty expreffions of gratitude to Subscribers, Correfpondents, and Readers in general. While we feel a pleature in fuch expreflions, we at the fame time acknowledge it our duty to accompany them with affurances that the Publication, which has now for a very long period been fo favourably received, fhall ftill continue to merit the fame patronage and enco agement-fo far as thefe can be deferved by the fame exertions, and a continuation of the Work upon the fame plan; we look forward therefore with a confiderable degree of confidence.

As both the plan and defign of the Publication have been fully laid before our Readers, in former addrefles, we shall not again repeat them here; it only remains to folicit a continuance of the liberal encouragement fo long beftowed on the SCOTS MAGAZINE, affuring our Subfcribers and the Public, that the 59th volume, which we are about to commence, will not fall fhort of any that have gone before.

A daring infult offered to their Majeflies in returning from Drury-lane Theatre, a ftone having been thrown into the carriage, which nearly ftruck the Queen.---A reward of 1000l. offered for difcovering the offender.---7. Advice received of the opening of the Corfican parliament; of the people having refufed to pay the impots levied upon them; and that they had maffacred feveral of the English in habitants.-15. Mr Grey brings forward a motion for peace, which is negatived, 189 to 50.-18. The Houfe of Commons, on the motion of Mr Wilberforce, agreed to abolish the Slave Trade, by a majority of 26 votes.

Auftrians under Gen. Beaulieu. These are followed by many fevere actions, in which the French claimed the victory. A gallant stand is made by the Auftrian army under Gen. Wurmfer, Bounaparte's army overruns Piedmont and Savoy, and dictates a tributary and difgraceful peace to the King of Sardinia,

General

A reverfe of fortune attends the French armies on the Rhine. Jourdan, after being defeated by the Archduke in feveral fevere engagements, retreats with precipitation towards Duffeldorff. Moreau's army being left uncovered by the defeat of Jourdan, is in hazard of being entirely cut oil; retreats through Suabia, and after fuffering great loffes, effects its efcape, and croffes the Rhine at Kehi; to which place the Auftrians fome time after lay fiege.-3. Buonaparte routes the Auftrian army in Italy.---13. The Archduke defeated near Donawert, that place t ken by the enemy, and his royal highnes forced to cross the Danube.--- 17.
