A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR RETAIL TRADESMEN AND

OTHERS TO BOOK-KEEPING BY DOUBLE ENTRY, or according to the Italian Method of Debter and Creditor; with Preliminary Remarks, showing its general utility, and urging its application to all kinds of accounts. The Principles are concisely stated and illustrated-First, by a Model in a Simplified Form, in which the Ledger only is used; Secondly, by a Model in an Amplified Form, in which Auxiliary Books are used with the Ledger; and, Thirdly, by a Model in a Comprehensive Form, the principal features of which are Condensation, the Check System for the Prevention of Error, and a Division into Open and Private Books, whereby the State of Affairs is accurately ascertained, and the Secrets of the Business known only by the Proprietor. By J. CALDECOTT. Price 5s., cloth.

Extracted from the "Chester Chronicle," of June 7, 1851 :

"A Practical Guide for Retail Tradesmen and others to Book-keeping by Double Entry,' is the title of a work just given to the public by Mr. J. Caldecott, of Chester. The book first commends itself to our consideration from being entirely a Chester production, being, in fact, written, printed, and bound in the old city; apart from which, however, its contents are of a truly practical and valuable character. The author was led to commence his undertaking from a conviction that a great necessity exists throughout the country, and particularly amongst retail tradesmen, for improvement in the practice of bookkeeping. In this we cordially agree. The long periodical lists in the 'Gazette' abundantly evidences the fact, unless we come to the sweeping conclusion that, without exception, embarrassed tradesmen are a set of consummate rogues and arrant swindlers. It might be demonstrated by a very simple process of reasoning, that any man with a clear head and an honest heart, once fairly established in business, and carrying on the same with an efficient system of book-keeping, with but average attention, is enabled to calculate with almost moral certainty upon the probable returns for his outlay, and consequently to direct his capital into the channels which will secure the prosperity of his business; and thus to make failure, at least to any more than a mere nominal extent, a moral impossibility. The doctrine of probability is as immediately applicable, and an acquaintance with it as essentially requisite to success, in the vending of a few yards of broadcloth or pounds of tea and sugar, as in the establishment of a Fire and Life Insurance Office. But we need say no more concerning the advisability of correct book-keeping; suffice it to say, that the Italian method of double entry, as popularly expounded and simplified by Mr. Caldecott, comprises everything that is necessary. The reader is at once rendered familiar with the main principle to be borne in mind, and which is illustrated by examples easily understood. In Mr. Caldecott's volume the retail tradesman, with a little study, will find every requisite information for reducing to practice the most correct, simple, and efficient system of book-keeping. trust the publication will meet with the success which it deserves. The typographical part of the work is neatly executed, and both printer and binder merit our approbation."
