This Chapel was built in the Reign of Henry VIII., and may be considered the most splendid example of private Ecclesiastical Architecture extant. The whole Interior is one gorgeous display of carving in oak, showing considerable originality in many of its members, and a variety in their details, which will prove as interesting to the Antiquary as they are useful to the Architect. The profusion of beautiful ornaments, which this volume displays, will also be found highly useful to carvers and ornamental artists of every description.

"It is astonishing to observe the progress which Gothic architecture has made in public estimation, within the last half century; and there can be little doubt, that the more it is studied, the more its beauties will be appre ciated the science displayed in its construction excites alike the wonder of the ignorant and the learned, while the almost endless diversity of arrangement and detail of which it is susceptible, produces that constant variety

which the mind always requires in contem-plating works of art."

"THE LUXURIANTLY CARVED CHAPEL AT LUTON PARK IS A MOST SPLENDID AND ELABORATELY EXECUTED SPECIMEN OF THE LAST STAGE OF TUDOR ARCHITECTURE. The beauty and fidelity of Mr. Shaw's elegant illustrations, reflect great praise on his talents and perseverance." Gent.'s Mag.

The following popular Works on Cottage Architecture, by P. F. Robinson, Esq., F.S.A. and Vice-President of the Institute of British Architects, have hitherto met with a considerable and steady sale at the full prices. The only reason for the present reduction is the expectation of proportionably increasing the demand for them.

The high estimation in which this and the following elegant publications of the same author are held by the Profession, and their utility to every person engaged in ornamenting and laying out estates, is now generally acknowledged. The great popularity of the Rural Architecture is indicated by its having already passed through three editions. In this, the fourth, the size is larger than heretofore, and the appearance every way more elegant, being printed in royal 4to. uniformly with Mr. Robinson's other works on Cottage Architecture. The plates, many of which are redrawn, and all renewed or re-engraved, present a marked superiority.

"Cottage Architecture has so material an effect among the features of a country, and occupies so conspicuous a place in the picture, that it is well to consider what forms are most pleasing and least intrusive. Mr. Robinson has taken somewhat of a new ground, or at least, he has confined his designs more particularly to the old English village style. His subjects are truly fitting to the object proposed. They are, in the pure sense of the word, elucidations of Rural Architecture, in almost every

practicable example, and efficient to all the purposes assigned to each. He has shewn that a scenic dwelling may be erected by a proper arrangement of the materials, at the same cost with the less attractive structure. We may add, that we should feel gratification in seeing many of his designs adopted, and if we were rich in territory, our villages and farms should certainly owe additional interest to his picturesque structures."

"Mr. Robinson is so favourably known to his profession and to the public by his RURAL ARCHITECTURE, that we are relieved from any occasion to speak of his general merits. In the present work he has added another claim to attention as a draughtsman of much fancy and taste. Most of these designs he informs us have been carried into effect; and some of them, in our opinion, must be indeed ornamental to the scenes amidst which they are placed. Though England has long been superior in the neatness of its rural buildings to any other country with which we are acquainted, there have heretofore been comparatively very few cottages or villas which

could be pointed out as possessing, in themselves, the qualities of picturesqueness or good feeling. They might produce such impressions by association, but this was merely accidental. Of late, however, a much finer taste has been cultivated, and in every quarter we see springing up architectural beauties, which not only agree with and improve surrounding nature, but which please and gratify the mind by their own merits. Mr. Robinson has contributed eminently to this improvement, and this as well as his preceding publications, are therefore well entitled to praise and patronage."-Literary Gazette.

This work is an honour to the country, as well as to the patronage of his Majesty, and the support of nearly three hundred distinguished Subscribers; nevertheless it has been very unproductive in all but fame to the spirited projector. With the desire of realizing a portion of the considerable capital which still remains invested in the work, the present proprietor has determined to reduce the prices for a limited period, in the hope of thereby considerably extending its sale. In the event of this success, of which he entertains little doubt, it is his intention to undertake the continuation of the work on the same scale, and he accordingly hopes shortly to publish Mr. Robinson's

HISTORY OF HADDON HALL,

to which he respectfully solicits additional Subscribers.

This beautiful volume was published only a few months since. quence of the death of the talented author, the edition has become the property of the advertiser, who, in accordance with his usual plan, has considerably reduced the price, although it was already lower in proportion than any modern publication of a similar description.

The Architectural Drawings of the late MR. WILD are as remarkable for their fidelity, as for their freedom and effect, and are highly appreciated by Artists.

"The subjects are well chosen; the architecture is grand and rich almost to redundancy; the artist has represented them with great exactness, but with spirit, and they are beautifully correct."-Times

"This is a very interesting work. None knew better than the late Mr. Charles Wild how to select and delineate the beauties of Gothic Architecture. The drawings are made with that admirable skill and care for which he is so justly celebrated, and etched with great delicacy; we would refer to the Choir of the Church of St. James, at Liege, as a wonderful specimen in this way; indeed, for accuracy and detail, it might serve the purposes of the architect; and to the Quadrangle of the Episcopal Palace, in which the varying ornaments of each separate pillar are clearly distinguishable, although the general effect is, extraordinarily bold and powerful. The Views of Heidelberg are equally admirable as specimens of elaborate finishing, yet, with but a tone of colour, the Terrace Front would make a beautiful landscape. What can be more fantastic than the morceau from the nave of the Church of the barefooted Carmelites at Ghent-or more rich and varied than the Hotel de Bourgtherolde, Rouen? But the most interesting among these beautiful etchings are those of the Cathedral of Chartres, so recently all but destroyed by fire." Athenæum.

"This beautiful work comprises 24 highlyfinished etchings of subjects selected from the most celebrated architectural remains of the taste and skill displayed in the middle ages, on the revival of the arts and sciences in Europe. The points of view, as well as the subjects, are chosen with judgment, and executed with great accuracy, taste, and skill, as

will at once be perceived on an inspection of the views."-Herald.

"We are charmed with the delicacy and grace, as well as the fidelity and spirit, with which the artist has impressed the peculiar architectural character of the subject on each of his plates, and has represented so as to call up the liveliest recollection of its minutest feature.

"The rich blending of sculpture and painting, tapestry and gilding, with the architectural graces of the Flemish churches, the occasional and fervent devotion which you witness before the various altars, and the multitude of picturesque accessories which never fail to attend the pencil of this graceful draughtsman, are of themselves sufficient to make his work desirable; and we believe the abilities of Mr. Wild are so justly appreciated, that his name alone would be a sufficient recommendation. Here then is a rare union of qualities in the artist and in his subject.

"The view down the long aisle of St. Bavon's, at Ghent, the gorgeous procession in the Cathedral at Mechlin and at Liege, the splendid oriel of St. James's Church at Antwerp, and the most curious quadrangle of the famous Episcopal Palace at Liege, are superbly executed. In the Knight's Hall at Heidelberg, and magnificent terrace in front of the Castle, the Mansion House at Louvain, the Hotel de Bourgtheroulde at Rouen, the Churches of St. Remi at Dieppe, St. Anne at Bruges, the Carmelites at Ghent, and the Cathedrals of Strasbourg, Chartres, & Amiens, the artist has been eminently successful. We trust that the public, in justice to itself, will reward his merits."-Atlas.

"This splendid work is now complete, and does equal honour to the genius of the artist, and the liberal spirit of the publishers. Ir IS UNEQUALLED IN ITS WAY, AND WILL BE LONG WITHOUT A RIVAL, WHETHER BOUND AS A VOLUME, TREASURED IN A PORTFOLIO, OR FRAMED FOR UNIVERSAL ADMI

RATION. With all our respect for Prout,

and some others, we must admit that there never was an artist who touched on Gothic Architecture with the same severe truth and fidelity as Mr. Wild."-Athenæum.

Lincoln is one of the most magnificent and interesting of our Cathedrals, the finest and most diversified in its architecture. As Mr. Britton discontinued his series of the English Cathedrals, without publishing Lincoln (in consequence of the ground being pre-occupied by Mr. Wild), this beautiful work, which is executed by the same engravers, becomes an indispensable adjunct, more especially now that it has been edited by Mr. Britton on the plan of all his other Cathedral Antiquities, and is also made to correspond with them in size and appearance. The plates are engraved in so expensive a manner, that the original cost of getting up this volume exceeded two thousand guineas.
