LINGARD'S ENGLAND, IN MONTHLY FIVE SHILLING VOLUMES. On the 1st of May was published, the First Volume, in foolscap 8vo., finely illustrated with a Portrait of the Author, richly engraved by Stocks, from an Original Painting by Lover, and a Vignette exquisitely engraved by Goodall, from a drawing by Harvey, price 5s., cloth extra, and lettered.

A

HISTORY of ENGLAND from the FIRST INVASION of the ROMANS. By JOHN LINGARD, D.D.

The Fourth Edition, Corrected and much Enlarged.

This beautiful Edition of the size and form of Southey's Cowper, and other works of that popular class, will be completed in the moderate compass of thirteen volumes, and sold for only 31. 5s. It has undergone a thorough revision by the Author; and matter, at least equal to an additional volume, is given. All passages have been examined which have been the subject of animadversion in Histories, Reviews, &c., and where faulty, corrected; when otherwise, such passages have been fortified with additional authorities, and important observations. The Author has also introduced, at the proper places, all new interesting matter which he has been able to collect since the first publication of the work, from many of the National Records, several recent Histories, and some foreign works bearing on the subject; besides these, some most valuable and hitherto unknown MSS. have been consulted with great advantage.

London: Baldwin and Cradock, Paternoster Row.

tit A prospectus of the plan of publication may be had of all booksellers. Volume II., illustrated with a splendid Vignette after Harvey, engraved by Goodall, of HENRY II., and PHILIP AUGUSTUS on the plain of Tours, is this day published.

This manual for the study of the fathers, the classical worth of which has been acknowledged by the first theologians, was lately recommended by Professor Möhler in his work "Athanasius" as a very important source for studying the works of the fathers. Professor Gieseler also, in his "Church-History," alludes to it with the same remarks. We, therefore, take the liberty of recommending it to every searching theologian, particularly as the present reduced price offers them so favourable an opportunity.

ONDERFULL EFFECTS of C. and A. OLDRIDGE'S BALM

WON

[ocr errors]

RESTORING HAIR.

Cambridge.-Gentlemen, having fully experienced the salutary effects of your far-famed BALM of COLUMBIA, I hasten now to return you my most sincere thanks for the great benefit which I have derived from your Balm, and shall now proceed to state the particulars of the case, which, if you think proper, you are perfectly at liberty to make public. About December last my hair fell off my head very rapidly, and by the end of January I had hardly any hair left; when a friend happening to mention your Balm to me, I resolved to purchase a bottle and try it, which I did, and found that it auswered admirably, and that my hair began to grow very fast, and by the time that I had used two six-shilling bottles I had a fine head of hair, which I still continue to have. "I am, Gentlemen, yours, &c. JAMES MACPHERSON.

"To Messrs. C. and A. Oldridge, 1 Wellington Street, Strand, London."

4

Oldridge's Balm causes whiskers and eyebrows to grow, prevents the hair from turning grey, and the first application makes it curl beautifully, frees it from scurf, and stops the hair from falling off. Abundance of Certificates froni gentlemen of the first respectability are shown by the Proprietors, C. and A. Oldridge, 1, Wellington Street, Strand, London, where the Balm is sold. Price 3s. 6d., 6s., and 11s. per Bottle. No other prices are genuine.

N.B. The Public are requested to be on their guard against counterfeits. Ask for Oldridge's Balm; 1, Wellington Street, Strand, London.
