original edition of one of the most extraordinary and curious productions of the fifteenth century and a work which can never fail to be in the highest degree interesting to the lover of ancient engraving and printing. The fine woodcuts present the first successful imitation of the cross-hatchings of a pen-drawing. If Koberger had printed but this chronicle he would have done enough to have placed his name among the most distinguished of the profession of the typographical art, but he has many other claims to a very marked celebrity. In the "Bibliotheca Spenceriana" no less than twenty-six pages are devoted to an account of the work accompanied by many fac-similies of the very singular woodcuts. Hearne in his preface of "Robert of Gloucester" says; "For my part, the oftener I consult this chronicle the more I wonder at the things in it, and I cannot but esteem the book as extremely pleasant, useful, and curious, by means of those very odd cuts."

BENJAMIN ASHWORTH,

No. 228 SOUTH NINTH STREET, Below WALNUT,
PHILADELPHIA.

[merged small][merged small][graphic][graphic][merged small]

It comprises seventy-eight leaves printed on one side, (156 pages) on fine plate paper, embracing over 1000 different designs, combinations of letters, examples of German Text, Old English, Script, &c., over 2000 different letters. A book of great use to Engravers, Jewelers, Coach, Sign and Decorative Painters, Card Writers, Die Sinkers, and Designers generally. It abounds in designs of practical utility, so that the album may be kept as a pattern and reference book-assisting in the selection of a design as well as furnishing ideas and suggestions to the invention of an artist. The designs are after eminent French artists, and the book containing two sets of monograms, of different styles, and produced on such good paper, forms not only the most complete, but the best, handsomest, and withal, the cheapest book of the kind extant. We have had a practical test of the acceptability of the book, and a promise of a rapid sale in New York renders us confident in recommending it as a profitable investment to booksellers and publishers of other cities.
