PREFACE.

To curiosity, which is, in a greater or less degree, implanted in the breast of every reasonable being, we stand indebted for the most important discoveries, the happiest improvements, and the greatest blessings of civilization. It is this which has given life and energy to the Arts, and strewed the rugged paths of Science with unfading flowers; to this we owe the matchless benefits of commerce and navigation; and in the future gratification of this passion, if properly directed, we may expect to reap many solid advantages.

The mind of man, conscious of its divine origin, and proud of its superiority in the scale of Creation, is ever busied in the pursuit of knowledge, and the investigation of those numerous objects with which it is surrounded. The embroidered earth, the wide extended seas, and the beauteous canopy of heaven, afford ample scope for meditation; and the mind that is neither biassed by pre
