INTRODUCTION. OUR noble "Ocean Heroes" roam and cruise around the world, far from all opportunities of any interested observation by the general public. From time to time their exploits as Naval Brigades on land bring them and their guns into prominent notice: as for instance, Commander Peel's Naval Brigade at Lucknow, Central India; also the R.N. Batteries in the Crimea; whilst lately we have all greatly admired our Royal Naval Brigades in Ladysmith, and during many engagements in South Africa. We may truly appreciate the intelligence and educated integrity of both officers and men in our British Royal Navy, whilst their practical nobility of character is manifested, not in a "namby-pamby" way, but with muscular, manly Christianity, and a most exalted and inspiring Patriotism. The writer knows personally these officers and men, and herein introduces these "Ocean Heroes" to the readers of this book.
