"Of the rich contents of this work which, in every respect, is to be recommended, we are only able to give a brief notice to show by illustrations the author's keen unprejudiced critic of the great war. Above all should every infantry officer make these tactical conclusions the object of his serious studies, about which there must be great controversy. Tactical details on the course of the skirmishes are arrived at everywhere with difficulty. Even the most genuine sources, the accounts of the chiefs of companies, squadrons, and batteries differ often in the most remarkable way with regard to time, place, and formations of troops. Only by examining and comparing the different representations can the actual parts be discovered, which lead to an understanding of the present aspect of military tactics. Out of these deductions alone can we get the lessons in infantry operations for war, and for training during peace. In all essential things according to our conviction, the author has rightly apprehended the lessons of the late war, and his views are a guide and criterion that will be of service to every officer in the German army."-Militair Wochenblatt.
